We are seeking a hardworking, highly skilled systems engineer to provide technical guidance and mentorship to the Weapon System Engineers (WSEs) within the W87-1 Modification Program. We are building a systems engineering team in California and New Mexico to successfully carry out this vital program. In this position, you will lead the team of Weapon System Engineers at the system level as we move through the 6.X process. You will need strong system engineering leadership capabilities with knowledge of the weapon product realization process and a willingness to define this new ND role.

The individual will be responsible for leading and coordinating the team of WSEs at SNL/CA who are responsible for various Product Realization Teams (PRTs) at SNL/CA. The WSE Lead, will partner closely to define, coordinate, and jointly execute these roles. This includes providing guidance to WSEs in the areas of requirements management, design maturation, qualification planning, successful PA-partnering, and timely reporting of issues to stakeholders. The WSE Leads will partner closely with the W87-1 team to closely align the WSE direction and communication with the various aspects of the systems team, and to address and resolve technical challenges with the other system team leads. The WSE Leads may also hold additional roles to meet system engineering needs on the W87-1 Systems team. You will also routinely partner with personnel across multiple SNL organizations, and production agencies, as well as represent Sandia in interactions with NNSA, Air Force, and other key partners.

For internal employees this is a promotion eligible position from Member level to Senior level or Senior level to Principal level.

Required:

+ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or another STEM discipline plus five or more years of experience, or equivalent engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development.
+ 1 or more years of experience working on a PRT or within NW product realization framework
+ Academic or job experiences in areas such as: engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects
+ Active DOE Q security clearance
+ Ability to travel up to 25%

Desired:

+ Master's Degree in STEM discipline
+ Experience leading growing, diverse teams in a dynamic environment
+ Experience developing, negotiating, and communicating requirements
+ 3 or more years of experience working on a PRT, NW systems team, or within NW product realization framework
+ Excellent communication skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling, strong writing skills, and strong interpersonal skills
+ Ability to contribute within team environments and in conjunction with diverse collaborators
+ Proven broad multi-disciplinary technical knowledge of NW systems
+ Experience in technology maturation, engineering design, product qualification, production, and related modeling/simulation
+ Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise production agencies and external customers

Department Description:

The W87-1 System Engineering Departments at SNL/CA and SNL/NM are jointly responsible for the W87-1 Modification Program. These departments are part of the Weapon Systems Engineering Centers, which are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The departments are comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers with advanced technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering. A major effort for these organizations is the engineering design and development in support of the W87-1 Modification Program. The W87-1 program restarted in Q1 FY19 in Phase 6.2 after a four-year pause, and Sandia is actively building the team to successfully execute the program.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
