We are seeking a hardworking Lead Surety Integration Engineer (job title: R&D S&E, Systems Engineering), with a background in mechanical, electrical, systems, or related engineering field to join the W80-4 System Team! The Surety Integration Lead is responsible for cross-cutting Nuclear Safety (NS) and Use Control (UC) development activities, including owning the development of joint NS/UC system surety requirements and overseeing the implementation of those requirements in the design of the system.

The Lead must have a multidisciplinary perspective with an innate curiosity to learn outside of their existing knowledge base. Having the capability to communicate optimally is a critical element for this position due to the collaborative nature of the role. The Lead works with the NS and UC Leads, and affiliated engineers. On any given day, you may be called to:

+ Develop cross-cutting NS and UC requirements for subsystems and components
+ Work with Weapon Systems Engineers (WSEs) to ensure successful component/subsystem design integration of all cross-cutting NS and UC requirements
+ Lead development of system-level cross-cutting NS and UC design concepts, architecture, and physical layout
+ Meet regularly with the Weapon Assessment Team (WAT) and performs the responsibilities of primary WAT POC.
+ Lead system team guidance to WAT reviews and coordinates system response to assessments
+ Coordinate decisions with NS/UC Assurance groups
+ Work with digital assurances teams and cyber security subgroups
+ Lead system input to the classification guide and ensures alignment with system team objectives and classification philosophies
+ Perform programmatic integration for NS and UC work, including Earned Value Management reporting, risk coordination, and schedule reviews
+ Perform cross-cutting NS and UC trade studies, balancing performance, costs, risks, materials, functionalities, and technology maturation
+ Write position papers on cross-cutting NS and UC topics
+ Prepare presentations and other supporting documentation needed for technical reviews
+ Represent the program while collaborating regularly with partners at Sandia, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies throughout the NNSA nuclear security enterprise, and Department of Defense organizations.
+ Partner with the UC Lead to interface with the Vulnerability Capability Unit (VCU)

Required:

+ Bachelor's degree in relevant field plus five or more years of related experience; or Masters degree in relevant field plus one or more years related experience; or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field; or equivalent engineering and scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development.
+ Academic or job experiences in areas such as: engineering design, qualification, production, requirements development, or related modeling/simulation projects
+ Ability to travel up to 25%.
+ Active DOE Q security clearance or equivalent

Department Description:

The various Systems Engineering Departments are part of the Sandia/California Weapon Systems Engineering Center which is responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
