We are seeking a hardworking Systems Engineer (job title: R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer) to join the W80-4 warhead Life Extension Program (LEP), for the Requirements Lead role. The W80-4 requirements lead is a demanding, highly visible position that requires collaboration with multiple partners and Product Realization Teams (PRT) across the nuclear weapons complex. In this role, you will lead a team of engineers and support staff to derive system requirements for systems, component groups, and collaborate in requirements negotiation with other Design Agencies (DAs), our PA counterparts, the NNSA customer, and the US Air Force. This role requires an in depth knowledge of the system design in order to provide a complete set of system requirements to all parties associated with the functionality of the W80-4. The Lead will be directly involved in all aspects of requirements management including testing, qualification and verification. This role also requires upward reporting to program leadership and Sandias executive management on metrics associated with requirements performance and/or exceptions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Derive system requirements for components compatibility documents
+ Derive and interpret shared requirements with LLNL
+ Collaborate regularly with the programs leadership and Sandias executive management on metrics and burn down plans
+ Prepare for and present to diverse audiences at technical design reviews and programmatic meetings
+ Coordinate with teams to develop a detailed understanding of customer requirements and ensure maturation of requirements for specific system aspects or components
+ Attend technical meetings with the mechanical, electrical and qualification teams
+ Work together with other system requirement engineers and/or component engineers, and provide technical mentorship on how to write appropriate requirements for verification
+ Manage the requirements database objects for requirements traceability, orphan requirements and inconsistencies within requirements language
+ Assist in integration activities with various teams and PRTs
+ Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams (i.e. NNSA, DoD, LLNL, SNL)

Required:

+ Bachelors degree in relevant field plus 5 or more years of related experience; or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Industrial Engineering plus 1 or more years of related experience; or equivalent related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development
+ Experience working on nuclear weapons design, qualification, production, or related projects
+ Ability to travel up to 25%
+ Active DOE Q security clearance or equivalent

Desired:

+ Experience writing requirements for either Joint Test Assemblies or other nuclear weapon system-level designs
+ Project management skills
+ Strong communication skills, including ability to present to large and diverse audiences
+ Team focused with ability to collaborate with a variety of personalities
+ Experience working with Earned Value Management

Department Description:

The W80-4 System Integration Departments are part of the Sandia/California Weapon Systems Engineering Center. The Weapon Systems Engineering Center is responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The W80-4 System Integration Departments are comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers with advanced technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering. A major effort for this organization is the engineering design and development in support of a Life Extension Program for a nuclear warhead (W80-4). The W80-4 warhead will be deployed on the future U.S. Air Force Long Range Standoff (LRSO) cruise missile that will replace the existing Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM)/W80 Warhead weapon system in our nation's nuclear deterrent stockpile. This is a long term program that will require close collaboration with many different departments within Sandia as well as with organizations outside of Sandia such as LLNL, NNSA, Production Facilities, and the Department of Defense (DoD).

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
