Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for nation's security? The Spray Research Technologies Department (1834) is seeking a R&D Materials Science Professional with a real passion for materials characterization and processing background and whose knowledge covers a broad range of (1) evaluating thermal spray microstructures to improve processing, (2) evaluating mechanical properties and adhesion for coatings and (3) using modeling to predict processing improvements.

On any given day you may be called on to:

+ Apply fundamental materials and metallurgical characterization to process improvements to thermal spray coatings
+ Develop fundamental materials and metallurgical characterization to mechanical property improvements for Thermal Spray Coatings
+ Develop creative technical solutions to challenging problems working with the TSRL team

Required:

+ You have an advanced degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Related Discipline plus a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)
+ Your background includes experience with materials and process development, characterization techniques, and process-structure-property relationships
+ You have experience with X-ray Diffraction
+ You possess an understanding of microstructures with Scanning Electron Microscopy
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q Clearance

Desired:

+ Ability to work as part of a team
+ Experience with Powder Materials
+ Excellent Communication Skills
+ Knowledge of Computer Programming (Python, C++, MatLab, etc.)
+ Experience with Mechanical Testing of Thermal Spray Coatings
+ Hands on Experience with Thermal Spray Technologies

Department Description:

Our mission is to provide Subject Matter expertise to the Laboratories in Thermal Spray technologies. We conduct state of the art research on the structure, processing, and properties of materials to improve the performance of coatings produced by 1) Plasma Spraying (Air and Controlled Atmosphere), 2) Twin Wire Arc Spraying, 3) Flame Spraying, 4) Cold Spraying and 5) Aerosol Deposition. We routinely support Sandia's engineers to solve a broad spectrum of materials selection, component design, component fabrication, coating process development, and process challenges by applying our fundamental materials science, physics, and chemistry expertise

Security Clearance:
