Department 2547 has openings for a Mechanical Engineer to assume design and development responsibility for several of the department's thermal battery products and to work with our sister departments in support of battery production and qualification activities\. The departments power sources design and development capabilities require a combination of skills and knowledge including mechanical engineering \(design, manufacture, test, and analysis\), materials, electrochemistry, and data analysis\. Your primary activities for this position are the design, development, production, and testing of power sources for our nuclear weapons customer as well as occasional work for other projects\. The position also requires integrating with other components and system level requirements and to be able to work with our production agency and vendors to manufacture and qualify our designs\. Some travel required\.


+ Bachelors and master's degree in mechanical, chemical engineering or relevant science or engineering discipline plus 1 or more years of relevant science or engineering experience; or a bachelors in mechanical, chemical engineering or in a related science or engineering discipline \(chemistry/physics/materials\) plus 5 or more years of relevant science or engineering experience\.
+ Thermal battery experience
+ Experience planning and conducting research and development
+ Experience in designing and testing hardware
+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-Level Security Clearance


+ Bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical, materials, chemical or physics\.
+ Ability to communicate scientific and engineering findings to internal and external contacts\.
+ Demonstrated understanding of energetic materials/devices applicable to advanced power sources technology R&DFamiliarity with software including Creo/ProE, Solidworks, MATLAB, Ansys
+ Knowledge of production and ability to work with production partners\.
+ Project management experience\.
+ Proven ability to develop operational procedures and documentation to ensure the safe operation of laboratories\.
+ Demonstrated teaming ability\.
+ Active DOE Q\-level security clearance

Department Description:

Responsible for research, design and development activities including materials research and process development and prototyping related to batteries \(molten salt and ambient temperature\) and RTG's for a variety of applications\. Significant work for DOD, DOE and other NFE customers\. Technologies supported include high temperature \(molten salt\) batteries, lithium primary and secondary batteries as well as hybrid systems and double layer capacitors\. Primary focus is on technology application to meet a variety of customer needs\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
