We are looking for dedicated, and hardworking Technical Systems Analyst at Sandia's Carlsbad, NM remote site reporting to the Senior Manager in charge of Sandia's work on WIPP and the person in charge of Sandia's Carlsbad remote site. You will be part of a dynamic, multi- disciplinary team that will perform technical work and analyses to support the Carlsbad Field Office of DOEs Office of Environmental Management on matters pertaining to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. We provide direct support to the Carlsbad Field Office and the Office of the National TRU Program (ONTP).

You will provide technical expertise to future programs involving geologic nuclear waste disposal systems as well as other areas where your skills will be in high demand. Work may include technical investigations in a variety of areas, such as TRU waste inventory at the DOE generator sites, TRU waste packaging configurations, implementation of WIPP requirements by the WIPP Certified Programs (WCP), and regulatory compliance.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop the short-term and long-term strategic management plan for the ONTP;
+ Develop program plans and implement procedures for the administration of the National TRU Program;
+ Develop programs and processes to lead the WIPP Certified Programs to ensure effective implementation of the WIPP requirements for waste acceptance and transportation;
+ Review and comment on memoranda, reports, analyses and other documents on behalf of the ONTP senior staff;
+ Perform and document analyses used to demonstrate impacts to waste repository regulatory compliance following planned or proposed changes at the site by the DOE;
+ Capture information from a variety of sources and apply analytical methods, objective assessments, and expert judgment to make recommendations;
+ Coordinate all aspects of strategic material management at the site level and throughout the Nuclear Weapons Complex;
+ Formally define problems to be solved and formulate solution requirements. Communicate results to explain options, insights, and trade-offs to customers and regulators in a concise way.

+ Bachelors degree in relevant discipline plus five or more years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
+ Detailed knowledge of and applied experience with scientific, mathematical, and engineering methods;
+ An understanding of TRU waste characterization and disposition;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain at least a DOE L-level security clearance.


+ Ability to function independently when needed, as well as having the ability to communicate and collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team.
+ Being strongly self-motivated is highly desirable;
+ Proven ability to team across all disciplines;
+ Proven ability to effectively communicate complex system issues and ideas;
+ Understanding of applicable Sandia National Laboratories and industry regulatory and safety guidelines;
+ Experience interacting with government customers and regulatory agencies;
+ Experience doing computational work in a quality assurance environment;
+ Experience with probabilistic risk assessment;
+ Knowledge of the types of work in which Sandia engages in support of WIPP;
+ Understanding of TRU waste characterization activities;
+ Understanding of TRU waste generator sites;
+ Understanding of WIPP TRU waste acceptance criteria.

Department Description:

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the world's only licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the disposal of transuranic nuclear waste. WIPP is operated by Nuclear Waste Partnership, LLC, under contract to the Department of Energy's Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO). Sandia provides scientific advice to CBFO in many areas, including modifications to the repository's operating permits, periodic recertification of the repository, and on-going monitoring of repository performance against regulatory requirements. The Defense Waste Management Programs Group (8880) provides the scientific and other resources needed to advise the DOE on issues that may pertain to continued and uninterrupted certification and permitting of WIPP.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
