Purpose

Seeking an experienced, detail-oriented applications engineer to support the use of advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and simulation technology on high performance computing platforms in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Advanced Reactor Engineering Group.

 

Major Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Develop CFD models for a variety of nuclear reactor and other thermal energy systems using state-of-the-art simulation technology.
  • Utilize ORNL’s world-leading high-performance computing platforms.
  • Apply high resolution large eddy simulations (LESs) and direct numerical simulations (DNSs), as well as steady and unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations of turbulent flows in heat transfer systems
  • Support multiphase RANS simulations and LESs for component design optimization, performance, and safety evaluations,
  • Complete verification, validation and documentation of the CFD results
  • Post-process CFD results to develop effective visualizations for conventional and immersive environments
  • Work in a team environment, interacting with other ORNL staff members within the ARE Group

 

 

 

Requirements

Qualifications Required

  • MS degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, computational sciences, or a related field with at least 1 year of relevant experience, or BS degree nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, computational sciences, or a related field plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience in applying the leading CFD codes for application to nuclear or thermal energy systems with similar geometric and phenomenological complexity
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of engineering problems, and an established aptitude in the application and deployment of CFD and heat transfer, transient analysis, and computational techniques on high performance computing platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, presentation, and writing skills, are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license

 

Qualifications Desired

  • Experience in the use and application of a variety of CFD turbulence modeling approaches, including RANS and LES methods.
  • Experience using common multiphase CFD methods such as volume of fluid (VOF), level set, or Eulerian-Eulerian dispersed phase
  • Experience in constructing computational meshes from CAD for large-domain complex geometries, defining appropriate boundary conditions, developing material property libraries from available correlations, defining effective convergence criteria, and extracting data from simulation results
  • Experience working in Linux environments on large commercial cluster computing architectures
  • Experience generating visualization data for 3-D display systems and/or virtual/augmented reality systems
  • Specific experience with commercial CFD codes such as STAR-CCM+, ANSYS Workbench (CFX/Fluent) and/or COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Specific experience with commercial mesh generation tools and CAD tools such as PTC-Creo, SolidWorks, NX, and/or ANSYS SpaceClaim
