Job Summary and Description:

  • Ability to apply technical knowledge to industry issues and gain input on needs from members/stakeholders and identify current and emerging technical issues.
  • Provides a to EPRI customers and develops research or services opportunities of value to them that fit EPRI’s mission and capabilities.  This will include solving customer problems, producing insights and information vital to the members, and delivering information in a manner that members and customers can and will apply. 
  • Identifies the most qualified internal and contractor team to complete the work.  Selects contractors, frames statements of work. 
  • Responsible for directing the work of a small team of contractors or EPRI staff to assure technical and financial milestones are met.
  • Provides input for employee selection, performance management, and development planning.
  • Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member Services and EPRI International.
  • Leads national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, and academia and research organizations.
  • Communicates strategies and results, written and verbal, to program members, potential members and external stakeholders through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops and conferences.
  • Manages small or medium program or multiple projects including budgets and resources.  Responsible for securing external funding or leveraging EPRI funding.
  • The position will conduct research that may include analytic or modeling work, laboratory evaluation, and field demonstrations.  The researcher will work collaboratively across disciplines and other research groups and will often support other projects. 
  • This position will likely have people management responsibilities.  Some travel will be required.
  • Technical and strategic leader of EPRI’s End-Use Energy Efficiency Project Set.  Research leader in the field of end-use electric technologies, with a primary focus on applications for energy efficiency, and an understanding of the interplay to electrification, demand response, and grid flexibility.  This position will work with EPRI staff, members, and other stakeholders to formulate innovative research concepts and develop them into new projects and programs, and to lead and partake in their completion.  The position will be instrumental in defining the strategic research path to support utility-based end-use energy efficiency programs and broader adoption for efficient application of end-use technologies.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required.
  • Preference is for candidates with an advanced degree in engineering, related to the electrical energy field and strong abilities in data analysis.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 8 - 10 or more years of research and development project and promotional experience, including development of advanced concepts for internal research. or equivalent  experience
  • Experience in successful project management proposal preparation, and marketing activities.
  • Responsible for project planning, budgeting, schedule.
  • Reports project results to members and advisors. 
  • Entry level people management responsibilities or actively in development to manage people.
  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives.
  • Exercises good judgment, diligence, and attention to detail and demonstrate an aptitude for carrying out responsible technical assignments.
  • Experience in performing and/or managing research activities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • 5 years experience related to utility program development and implementation is preferred.
  • Preference is for candidates that have a solid understanding of research methods and demonstrated research practices, and have produced relevant works related to end-use technologies or energy efficiency.
  • Candidate must have a demonstrated capability for both internal and external collaboration and teamwork.  Preference is for candidates with the skills and attitude for exceptional people management.

Looking for someone that has established a solid reputation in the electricity energy efficiency field, through their own initiative, productivity and understanding of the industry who is able to generate ideas about needs for future research based on a thorough understanding of the electricity and end-use energy fields.  These ideas should feed into the strategic direction of future research as part of a larger research group. The successful candidate should be personable and naturally able to work with others from various disciplines. This person should also derive satisfaction  by helping colleagues to grow professionally, and by learning from colleagues to enhance their own abilities. 

The ability to manage employees in different career stages is vital.  The person in this role should be able to balance the needs of people management and their own technical pursuits, while measuring success by the performance of the overall research group. 

Excellent communication skills that are demonstrated in written publications and oral presentations are critical to the success of this position.
