This position will report to the Director of Global Technology and will be focused on product design and optimization with recycled paperboard.The successful candidate will learn critical aspects of mechanics that are unique to Sonoco’s strategy.  A long-term goal is to develop into Sonoco’s lead technologist in this strategic technology platform.   In addition to Mechanics, this position is meant for someone with strong analytics skills; programming knowledge/skills.

  • Review and master past Mechanics R&D findings at Sonoco. 
  • Understand business needs and priorities.  Using a fundamental knowledge of Mechanics with minimal technical guidance, collaborate with colleagues to propose, plan, develop and execute projects to significantly improve profitability.  Projects could include experiments, finite element analysis, custom software development, or data analysis – predictive modeling, dashboards, etc. leading to the development or optimization of the materials (usually paper) used to make our products and of the product designs themselves.
  • Understand performance requirements of customers and suppliers to uncover unmet technical needs and help resolve technical issues as they arise.
  • Provide guidance and support to other members of the technical team.  Be a resource in the areas of structural design, experimental design, data analysis, mathematical analysis, software development, and Finite Element Analysis.  Provide technical training as needed.
  • Work with programmers to support and refine custom legacy software tools (Visual Basic, MATLAB, Fortran) as well as upgrade and create new custom software tools as needed.
  • R&D experience in industry or academia especially project planning, budgeting, and execution.
  • Familiarity or experience using finite element software, especially ABAQUS or ANSYS.
  • Familiarity with Mechanics of composite materials or paperboard.
  • Familiarity with software development tools, including .Net environment (C#), Visual Basic 6.0, Fortran, MATLAB, SQL, and MS Access.
  • Familiarity with Mathematical optimization software and business analytics tools such as Power BI, R, Python, and GAMS.
  • Communication skills – ability to communicate with non-technical colleagues, including customers, suppliers, and Sonoco operations and marketing   

 

This is a senior level R&D position, located at Sonoco’s corporate headquarters in Hartsville, SC.

  • PhD or MS in Applied Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering with focus in Solid Mechanics is strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of relevant experience is required (10+ years of relevant experience is preferred)
