Space Sensors Opto-Mechanical Engineer (Experienced)

We are seeking experienced or recent PhD mechanical engineer to provide advanced technical support with minimal supervision. This support will focus on mechanical/electro-optical design, fabrication, and assembly; interpreting and translating mechanical/optical concepts into opto-mechanical designs and fabricated hardware; documentation; and finished experimental systems. Other responsibilities may involve providing operations, testing, data acquisition/recording/interpretation and diagnostic support as required. The selected candidate will contribute in the development of new techniques and processes, and in the improvement of existing ones to ensure the successful completion of a project.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
+ Develop conceptual and detail designs of opto-mechanical hardware for optical system applications.
+ Identify, analyze and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex mechanical problems using individual creativity and judgment.
+ Perform technical calculations and analyze cost effectiveness of design, schedule and materials.
+ Use drafting, design, engineering and scientific programs on computer systems to produce supportive documentation and graphics.
+ Independently design, fabricate and assemble complex mechanical hardware.
+ Evaluate and characterize materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of mechanical problems.
Align with established ES&H regulations and procedures and perform duties in a manner that will not endanger the employees or other individuals, harm facilities or equipment or violate environmental regulations.
Required:
+ Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of five (5) years of experience or Mechanical Engineering PhD plus one (1) year of experience
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Desired:
+ Knowledge of mechanical design, fabrication and opto-mechanical mechanisms
+ Experience with advanced engineering hardware design, fabrication, evaluating, and testing processes
+ Experience in machining, mechanical assembly and de-bugging systems in solving complex mechanical problems
+ Experience with operating principles in vacuum technologies
+ Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
+ Experience with optical raytracing software (e.g. Zemax, Code V, and/or OSLO)
+ Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
+ Excellent teaming, influencing, and communication skills
Department Description:
The Monitoring Systems & Technology Center (6700) has researched and developed new monitoring systems and technologies for over half a century. Building on that legacy, today we support national security missions involving nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, and various needs within the national security communities.
Specifically, the Proliferation Defeat Concepts team specializes in development of multi-function sensors, targeting systems and SWAP (size, weight & power)-constrained platforms supporting a diverse suite of national security missions.
