The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. Our Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a FULL-time (100%) SOFTWARE ENGINEER/BIOINFORMATICS.  The person in this role will provide analytical and operational support for a state-of-the art clinical laboratory performing cutting edge molecular diagnostic clinical assays through development of bioinformatics, web, and database applications.  This position will work closely with faculty members and staff, and collaborate with other Senior Computer Specialists and Software Engineers in the department as needed to achieve goals.

The person in this role will be familiar with the complexities of a modern software development, cloud-based infrastructure; user interface/experience design as well as user testing; software development best practices including version control software, authorship and maintenance of documentation; and coordinating activities with other software developers and non-programming staff. This role will work within a heterogeneous environment and translate complexity between technical and non-technical directors and staff. This position will require both integration of existing infrastructure, applications and processes as well as the development of new ("greenfield") solutions.

The SOFTWARE ENGINEER/BIOINFORMATICS will help maintain and expand our national leadership in clinical Next Generation DNA Sequencing technology by creating novel data analysis tools, support and build tools to improve our operation efficiency that further the advancement of cancer diagnostics and precision medicine at the University of Washington.

General Duties:

Software engineering/Development
  • Full-stack web development including API design, front end design, deployment and database development.

  • Integration with existing applications, including the laboratory information system, as necessary.

  • Efforts will support the Genetics and Solid Tumors and associate NGS laboratory by designing, building and testing web- or mobile-based applications.

Infrastructure/cloud engineering
  • Assist in building and expanding our AWS application data infrastructure.

  • Deploy new resources (e.g., databases, servers, cloud-specific resources) to support application development and integration efforts.

Team/Laboratory Immersion
  • Gain deep understanding of laboratory pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic procedures and workflows.

  • Build process diagrams with intent of identifying streamlined solutions and workflows that support improved quality, efficiency and throughput.

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, Physics, Applied Math or related discipline, AND 4 years of experience in the following:

  • Experience designing a RESTful API and implementing it using the python/flask framework.

  • An eye for UI/UX and who is skilled at using a modern Javascript stack (e.g., React) and development toolchain (webpack/babel etc)

  • Strong working knowledge of SQL schema design and queries.

  • Excellent spoken and written communication and documentation skills.

  • Ability to identify requirements for applications and processes, and can think critically about downstream impacts on laboratory and clinical operations, as well as our patients.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.

  • Experience with designing laboratory information systems or other workflow management tools.

  • Knowledge of next-generation sequencing principles.

  • Experience with designing and implementing frontend testing principals.

  • Mobile web or application development.

  • Experience with formal user interface design principals.  

  • Experience with cloud computing services such as Amazon AWS.

  • Experience in development of or contribution to open source projects.

  • Wet-bench experience performing PCR and sequencing-based assays.

  • Experience with molecular diagnostics.
