You could be the Shock and Thermodynamics Professional to oversee all aspects of the operation of the DICE facility including program planning, experiment planning, scheduling on multiple platforms, experiment execution, data collection/dissemination and managing the multimillion-dollar facility budget. The opportunity to collaborate with internal and external customers to determine requirements for experimental capabilities and utilization, including diagnostic requirements from e xperimenters. You will have the opportunity to contribute and participate in workshops and conferences to gather guidance from potential users and report on technical work and accomplishments. You will oversee all Work Planning and Control processes, documentation and all effective ES&H conduct of operations for the facility to include authoring all NEPA, PHS, and other safety documentation. Must be willing to learn and gain comprehensive understanding of the DICE facilities laboratory launchers. Extensive opportunities exist to collaborate with internal and external scientists on research in the broad areas of dynamic material properties and high energy density science.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Train and supervise multiple technicians who perform various aspects of the experimental preparation and execution.
+ Field, maintain, and develop state of the art control systems, and diagnostics to provide fundamental, high precision material compressibility data or equation of state for models that determine the dynamic material behavior of materials at the DICE Facility.
+ Recognize alternative possibilities and consistently demonstrate the ability to complete tasks safely within a hazardous environment.
+ Be involved in designing, instrumenting, and executing experiments at the DICE facility, analyzing existing data, and/or designing and implementing new diagnostic systems, and manage, as necessary, day-to-day technical issues at DICE to ensure all problems are resolved safely
+ Implement methods of testing materials, explore new approaches within established practices and procedures including fielding novel diagnostics as required for making important material property measurements.
+ Apply technical knowledge for determining approaches to complete assignments, shall work with minimal direction, and work will be reviewed for adequacy and accuracy.
+ The opportunity will exist to work as a team leader and principal investigator as well as a key member of a team doing research at the cutting edge of the application of high energy density physics.
+ Occasional travel will be required

+ Masters in electrical or mechanical engineering, physics or other relevant discipline and two years experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Experience and working knowledge of optics, lasers, and high-speed data acquisition systems.
+ Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB, and embedded controllers.
+ Experience developing computer-based control and/or data acquisition systems for science or engineering applications
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance and be eligible for Special Access Programs


+ Experience leading an experimental, multi-functional laboratory
+ Experience with optics, lasers, and high-speed data acquisition systems.
+ Working knowledge of VISAR, PDV, spectroscopy, and radiography for science experiments.
+ Experience with shock physics experimentation
+ Experience integrating hardware and software into safe and reliable systems
+ Experience with the application, use, and programming of software and embedded controllers (ex. National Instruments LabVIEW or MATLAB)
+ Experience with digital compound and measuring microscopes, and other metrology equipment
+ Strong analytical skills, creative ability, and proven ability to contribute to fast paced, multi-disciplinary teams
+ Ability to be dedicated and willing to accept multiple simultaneous job assignments
+ Highly self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills
+ Experience creating models and prints using SolidWorks

Department Description:

Department 1647 is responsible for measuring material properties at low to medium pressures (11,000 kbar) using a wide array of capabilities. Department 1647 staff performs research on the DICE facility, the STAR facility, and the Z pulsed power facilities. Areas of interest range from equation of state to properties of heterogeneous or energetic and advanced materials. This department works collaboratively with the Dynamic Material Properties Department, as well as with many other groups at Sandia and in the US National Security arena.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
