Job Summary

The Power Delivery and Utilization (PDU) sector conducts a broad range of technology research for electric utilities related to the delivery of electricity. This Senior Technical Leader position will technically lead and manage research projects to address the cyber security challenges faced by utilities and advance the state-of-knowledge in cyber security. This position is also responsible for working directly with utility personnel, standards bodies, and technology companies to carry out research projects that have an impact on the industry.   

Job Functions:

  • Leads or participates in EPRI research projects associated with in power delivery, power grid operations, utility IT, or other critical infrastructure.

  • Supports EPRI research projects by providing technical expertise and/or performing technical tasks, independently or in a team.

  • Communicates research motivation, progress and results, written and verbal, to program membership and potential members through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops, and conferences. 

  • Applies technical knowledge to industry issues, acquires input on needs from members, and identifies current and emerging technical issues.

  • Monitors and/or participates in industry user forums, working groups, activities.

  • Maintains technical expertise. Maintains/participates in/establishes good national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.

  • Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member and Technical Services and EPRI International.

  • Technical or BS degree in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or an with strong computer or networking emphasis.

  • A minimum of 8 years prior related experience in cyber security related to the electric sector. Individuals with advanced degrees may qualify with fewer years of work experience.

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other engineering preferred.

  • Work experience at an electric utility or related contractor preferred.

Education, Skills, and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

  • Technical or BS degree in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or an with strong computer or networking emphasis is preferred.

  • A minimum of 8 years prior related experience in cyber security related to the electric sector is strongly preferred.

  • Individuals with advanced degrees may qualify with fewer years of work experience.

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other engineering preferred.

  • Work experience at an electric utility or related contractor is preferred.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience in implementing technical security controls in IT or OT environment.
  • Experience in technical security assessment, vulnerability assessment, or network penetration testing in IT or OT environment

  • Experience in designing and implementing communication networks for industrial control systems

  • In-depth knowledge security aspects of various telecommunication technologies used in SCADA, Smart Grid, IoT or other cyber-physical systems.

  • Experience in evaluating of cloud-based services

  • Experience in engaging directly with electric utilities on projects that include power delivery operations technology (transmission, distribution, or end user).

  • Experience working with utilities to implement the NERC CIP standards, compliance objectives, and strategies. 

  • Experience applying common guidelines, such as the NIST 800 series and NISTIR 7628.

  • Strong writing and presentation skills. Solid computer skills and attention to detail are essential.
