The Customer Engagement Platform (CEP) value stream is seeking a Senior Manager of SRE for the Card website and mobile application. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) applies software engineering techniques and discipline to production operations to attack major problems and fix them for good. Discover's Card website and mobile application are two of our company's most critical applications, and two of our busiest, with over 1.5 billion logins each year. This team's job is to ensure that the Card website/mobile application is highly available for our cardmembers.

SRE is evolving at Discover, and the manager of this team will have the chance to influence the direction for a critical SRE organization. There will be ample opportunities for growth in many areas including technology skills, leadership, mentorship, design, and more.

The candidate for this position must be able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and motivate team members and stakeholders. In addition, the candidate must have the ability to think strategically, innovatively and creatively, and have the passion to embrace and drive new ideas in the company with the ability to weigh risk and benefits for initiatives.

Responsible for the application ownership, development delivery, and support for value streams. Manages a team, including hiring, directing, mentoring, and assigning work.

Responsibilities

  • Leading a team of SREs
  • Maturing the environment readiness and QA activities by additional automation
  • Understanding new technology capabilities needed to acquire and develop programmer/developer talent
  • Acquiring, developing, coaching, mentoring talent (employees and contracted resources)
  • Coaching teams on Agile principles
  • Coaching team members on career development as it aligns to their roles
  • Maturing application release management best practices, including CI/CD activities
  • Leading the efforts to build robust monitoring solutions
  • Leading emergency response efforts, root cause analysis, and permanent solutions to improve availability, response and recovery times
  • Championing capacity management efforts
  • Ensuring applications are performing efficiently, partnering with application teams to resolve application performance issues.
  • Managing change control for applications and platforms
  • Championing automation efforts to reduce or eliminate manual processes
  • Coaches and mentors team members. Supports individuals to achieve their individual development goals. Utilizes Agile and Lean practices to identify and solve systemic issues.
  • Consults with management in the analysis of short- and long-range business requirements and recommends innovations.
  • Utilizes tools to support data-driven decision making. Identifies and removes blockers to enable the team to meet business goals.
  • Manages software ownership and development from initial concept through continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here's what we need from you:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field
  • 8+ years of experience in Application Development
  • 2+ years of experience in supervising

Preferred Qualifications

If we had our say, we'd also look for

  • 4+ years of experience in SRE concepts and the DevOps culture with a focus on leveraging software engineering tools, methodologies and concepts
  • 4+ years of experience, in depth understanding of automation and CI/CD processes
  • Experience in the Financial Services Industry
  • Experience/exposure with:
    • Network
    • Unix/Linux
    • Modern web development frameworks
    • Cloud PaaS architectures including PCF, AWS
    • Chef, App-D, Service Now Orchestration, GitHub, Jenkins,
  • Skills:
    • Operational mindset and be a champion for automation
    • Strong problem solving skills
    • Composure under pressure
    • Excellent verbal and written communication
