We are seeking a highly motivated Corporate Communications Specialist to write news releases about science and technology, use multimedia to highlight Sandias accomplishments and create interest in our work, resulting in local, trade and national media coverage, and to host media visits and serve as a spokesperson to enhance and protect Sandia's reputation\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Promote positive local and national media coverage of Sandia as a premier national security lab\.
+ Consult with executive management to ensure communications are effectively and strategically aligned to mission goals\.
+ Use your natural curiosity to learn about science and technology to obtain a broad knowledge of Sandias research and maintain good working relationships with the media and other external customers\.
+ Quickly and effectively handle crisis and emergency communications, working with Sandia employees, management and stakeholders to provide timely responses to media inquiries to minimize negative publicity\.

Required:

+ Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, technical writing or a humanities or science field\.
+ Three or more years of journalism or public affairs experience, including freelance writing\.
+ Experience working with media either as a public information officer, freelancer or media representative\.

_Applicants considered for interviews will be required to produce writing samples and successfully complete a writing test\._

Desired:

+ Communications experience with a focus on science or technology\.
+ More than five years experience working with media as a public information officer, freelancer or media representative\.
+ Proven ability to write clearly, concisely and effectively for a public audience\.
+ Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines and prioritize work\.
+ Crisis and emergency communications experience\.
+ Masters degree in humanities, science, technical writing or other communications field\.
+ Experience working with U\.S\. government agencies\.
+ Good negotiating skills, project management abilities and an ability to work with a variety of people independently and in a team environment\.
+ Experience in corporate communication planning, developing and implementing communication plans or campaigns or organizing media events or branding strategies\.
+ Knowledge of AP style\.
+ Knowledge of media metrics and measuring results\.
+ Desire to grow in your career\.
+ Willingness to continuously learn from on\-the\-job experiences and share those lessons to benefit the team\.

Department Description:

Media Relations and Emergency Communications provides timely, proactive and regular communications to local, trade, national and international media about Sandia's mission, scientific and technical achievements, role in our communities and role as a preferred employer\. Media relations staff serve as official Sandia spokespersons and provide content for news releases, talking points, the Sandia Lab News, sandia\.gov, the media, social media and fact sheets\. Media relations specialists write communication plans, strategies for responding to negative media issues and plan for news conferences and media visits\. We comply with DOE/NNSA and Sandia direction governing how Sandia disseminates information to the public in an emergency\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.
