Department Description:

The Sandia California site has multiple Science & Engineering Project Management (S&E PM) departments within the Nuclear Deterrence Portfolio. These teams are responsible for using engineering experience to execute the project management responsibilities for the modernization and stockpile Nuclear Weapons Programs. The Nuclear Weapons Programs are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons, enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The Nuclear Weapons Programs three principal thrusts are: overseeing the enduring nuclear weapons stockpile; innovative analyses and evolution of warhead systems, subsystems, and components; their production and deployment; along with the development of supporting technologies; and the safe, effective, and environmentally responsible dismantlement and disposal of weapons retired from the stockpile. Informed with technical expertise in engineering, the S&E PMs provide and employ program/project management (PM) resources to plan, execute, manage, and report major program aspects. These include cost, schedule, performance, requirements, risk and opportunities, aspects of quality assurance, and information management functions associated with moderate to large scale science, technology, and engineering (ST&E) efforts that span the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) enterprise. These departments are also an integral part of the Division 8000 Nuclear Weapons (NW) Project Management Office (PMO). S&E PMs may be assigned to a variety of different programs including the Mark 21 Fuze, W80-4 Life Extension Program, W87-1 Modification Program, B83, W87, and W80 Stockpile Programs, and a variety of Nuclear Weapon component teams.
