We are seeking a highly motivated Safety Basis Engineer to join our dynamic team\. You will be performing safety basis analyses of nuclear and industrial facilities to ensure safe operations\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform analyses of processes, systems, and accident phenomenology\.
+ Develop and review nuclear safety cases and reactor licensing applications\. Identify hazards, establish hazard categorization based on regulatory requirements, perform complex hazards analyses to identify appropriate controls, and conducts detailed readiness reviews\.
+ Perform engineering analyses of nuclear or radioactive materials, chemical inventories, high\-energy materials, and operations to resolve a facility's hazard categorization\.
+ Conduct safety basis analyses for facilities, including hazard identification, hazard analysis, accident analysis, and control selection\.
+ Oversee licensing collaborates with respect to licensing of a new nuclear reactors or nuclear facilities\.
+ Document safety analysis \(DSA\) and technical safety requirements \(TSRs\) for nuclear facilities, safety evaluations for accelerators, and safety assessments for industrial facilities that require a more rigorous analysis\.

Required:

+ Bachelors degree in a relevant STEM discipline plus 8 years of relevant experience; or a Masters or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Systems Engineering or a relevant STEM discipline plus 4 years of relevant experience\.
+ Experience in Nuclear Safety\.

Desired:

+ Five or more years of experience with Nuclear Safety Basis at DOE facilities\.
+ Experience with review of Documented Safety Analyses \(DSAs\) and Technical Safety Requirements \(TSRs\) for research reactors, critical assemblies, and non\-reactor nuclear facilities at DOE Facilities\.
+ Experience with the use and/or development of nuclear safety modeling codes and techniques\.
+ Knowledge of and/or experience with reactor kinetics, physics, and thermo\-hydraulic engineering calculations and modeling\.
+ Experience performing hazard analyses using techniques from Guidelines for Hazard Evaluation Procedures including but not limited to safety checklist, what\-if checklist, failure modes and effects analysis, fault/event tree, and qualitative risk analysis\.
+ Experience leading diverse teams and ability to work cooperatively in a team\-oriented environment\.
+ Experience with successful facilitation and resolution of potentially contentious issues in a diverse group setting\.
+ Ability to provide solutions for issues which may be identified during review processes\.
+ Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively both verbally and in writing\.
+ Experience with the hazard categorization processes and principles of DOE\-STD\-1027\.
+ Proficiency with the Unreviewed Safety Question \(USQ\) process\.
+ Ability to produce high\-quality work, on schedule, with minimal supervision\.
+ Experience with implementing and/or validating the implementation of safety controls\.
+ Experience with conduct of operations \(ConOps\) in nuclear facilities\.
+ Current, active U\.S\. DOE L or Q\-clearance\.

The ES&H Planning Department contributes to the execution of the Sandia National Laboratories' mission at all levels within the processes of planning and executing work across the laboratory\. + Provide program, technical assistance, and tools to assist customers in understanding and integrating work planning into their activities\.
+ Our subject matter expertise includes safety basis regulatory requirements, Primary Hazard Screening design/development/maintenance, Nuclear and Industrial Facility Safety Basis determination and support, Conduct of Operations, Readiness Assessments, and Work Planning and Control/Engineered Safety collaboration\.
+ Services provided include on\-site technical assistance, training, document reviews, audits and assessments, and support of failure modes analyses/hazard evaluations\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre\-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.
