We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated R&D, Systems Engineer to work as a Risk Analyst in the area of nuclear power applications as part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers. The selected candidate will need knowledge of nuclear power plant systems and operations to build technical expertise, lead research, and deliver technical reports. Risk research will take advantage of Sandia National Lab's state-of-the-art high performance computing and experimental facilities.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Expand the cutting edge in risk analysis methodology, including dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA), Bayesian decision theory, quantitative risk assessments (QRA), machine learning techniques for predictive risk monitoring, and other methods;
+ Utilize high performance computing, to realistically characterize a technologys risk profile, and quantify uncertainty, through coupling of probabilistic methods with advanced high-fidelity modeling and simulation techniques;
+ Lead interdisciplinary teams to develop the technical basis to support risk-informed evaluations on advanced reactor technologies, next generation transportation systems, and other critical infrastructure;
+ Travel (when applicable and safe based on current restrictions and guidelines), including some potential international travel to present and discuss technical results;
+ Disseminate your research to the risk and nuclear communities through technical reports, journal articles, and conference presentations.


+ Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Statistics, Reliability, Operations Research or related technical degree and at least ten years of experience working with risk management methods for nuclear facilities, or other high consequence technologies (e.g., aerospace, oil and gas); or PhD in fields listed plus at least six years of related experience;
+ Record of proficiency and practice in one or more of the following areas: probability, statistics, risk analysis, decision theory, expert elicitation, Monte Carlo analysis, machine learning;
+ Technical writing skills as evidenced through peer reviewed journals, conference proceedings or technical reports.


+ Demonstrated ability to lead a team of scientists and engineers, and/or develop new program spaces for your organization;
+ Ability to provide mentorship to emerging engineers and scientists,
+ Experience in using hazard analysis methods, performing probabilistic safety assessments, and working in a top down approach to systems analysis;
+ Experience in physics modeling and simulation and using high performance computing systems;
+ Experience in applying verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification methods;
+ Experience in supporting experimental programs to validate models;
+ Experience in some of the following software or languages: R, Python, Dakota, C++, Fortran, C#;
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Department Description:

The Fire, Risk, & Transportation Systems department conducts risk related work to high consequence systems including nuclear facilities, critical infrastructures, advanced energy systems, transportation and packaging of nuclear materials, and other national security related work. Risk-informed R&D in this department currently supports research into probabilistic risk assessments and analysis, fire risk analysis, transportation risk analysis, and other risk related work. The focus of the department's efforts is on research related to operational risk and risk analysis of high-consequence engineered systems and emerging technologies to various threats including system failure mechanisms, reliability issues, kinetic threats, and naturally occurring events. These systems include nuclear power reactors, energy systems, and international nuclear related risk. The department supports an array of governmental entities, building risk insights to guide the decision-making that advances the national interest. The department's client base includes the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other federal and non-federal entities.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
