We are seeking two R&D S&E, Microwave & Sensor Engineers.

The Directed Energy Enterprise (Departments 05497-Directed Energy Missions, 05498-Directed Energy Applications, and 05499-Directed Energy Assessments) are actively seeking two motivated and experienced Microwave & Sensor Engineers to join our high performing team! As the selected candidate, you job will primarily consist of assessing the response of various electronic systems or components to High Power Microwave (HPM) illumination as well as evaluating the effectiveness of HPM sources.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

+ Writing project proposals
+ Creating design of experiments
+ Developing a detailed understanding of the unit or system under test
+ Executing tests and directing test execution
+ Analyzing test results
+ Communicating test results (presentations and written reports) to stakeholders
+ Making recommendations on how to improve effectiveness of an HPM attack and improve survivability against an HPM attack
+ Assessing HPM weapon systems
+ Interfacing with customers and partners
+ Shaping the future through new concepts and applications of the technology
+ Expanding department’s reach into new mission spaces
+ Timely delivery on commitments
+ Participation in professional societies and conferences
+ Assisting in other areas within the Directed Energy Enterprise (DEE)

Required:

+ Master’s (plus one year experience) or PhD degree in EE, Physics, or equivalent STEM Field
+ Experience with RF diagnostics and instrumentation
+ Experience with RF testing and data analysis
+ RF modeling and simulation experience
+ Willingness to travel occasionally
+ Ability to obtain Q and SCI clearances

Desired:

Ideally, your background would also include:

+ Experience interfacing with DoD or DOE/NNSA organizations
+ Experience measuring shielding effectiveness and/or identifying effects of RF interference
+ Experience with RF source and antenna design
+ Experience with electromagnetic propagation
+ Experience with project management
+ Experience with the following tools: electrostatic codes, circuit codes, Mathcad/MATLAB or Mathematica or Python, LabVIEW, HFSS, FEKO, PSpice, SolidWorks
+ Experience with analog and digital circuit design for controls
+ FPGA programming experience
+ Knowledge of the current state of the art in directed energy
+ Team building and program management skills would be a plus
+ A self-starter able to adapt to a fast-paced, customer-focused operation with emphasis on meeting deliverables
+ Demonstrated experience in effectively working in a team environment
+ Good documentation skills (for assistance in record keeping, documentation, and ES&H compliance) and attention to detail
+ Active Q or TS clearance
+ Active SCI clearance

Department Description:

The Directed Energy Enterprise (Departments 05497, 05498, 05499) is a high-performance, multi-disciplinary team dedicated to pushing the frontiers of technology. Our primary areas of interest include high-power electromagnetic systems, compact pulsed power systems, radio frequency sources, antennas, and electronic effects phenomena. We execute research and development to support mission execution of Directed Energy technologies and associated sources, sensors, and components. Work environments range from laboratory work in state-of-the-art facilities to field work at local and remote test sites. Work products range from studies and analyses to delivery of beyond-state-of-the-art hardware to support our customer base to move Directed Energy technologies to the war-fighter.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
