We are seeking an experienced computational/theoretical researcher (R&D Materials Scientist) to lead fundamental research into tailoring electronic, photonic, and transport properties of advanced materials, quantum materials, and functional components (devices) made from them. Target applications span information processing, sensing, and energy conversion and storage. Most often your work would contribute to efforts of a multidisciplinary team of computational and experimental researchers, internally and externally to Sandia. You will be encouraged to present your technical results at conferences and publish your research in high profile, peer-reviewed journals.

On any given day, you may:

+ Develop insight and understanding of materials and devices through modeling their behaviors at a range of scales, from macroscopic phenomenological models to microscopic, first principles quantum mechanical numerical simulations
+ Use theory, modeling, and simulation to advance the state-of-knowledge in the fields of the electronic, opto-electronic, and light-matter interaction properties of nano-fabricated materials and address complex problems in their application
+ Design novel nano-/micro-scale structured materials that will be fabricated and experimentally characterized; engage in needed experimental characterization
+ Engage program managers and sponsors to understand their needs, present research ideas, or report on work in progress
+ Provide leadership in developing research proposals in response to funding opportunity announcements both internal and external to Sandia National Laboratories and in executing your new projects.

Required:

+ PhD degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering, engineering physics, or a closely related field with at least five years' relevant experience
+ Extensive experience in condensed matter physics, optics, materials science, and quantum materials or nano-/micro-scale devices
+ Experience with advanced scientific programming and computational modeling applied to electronic and opto-electronic devices, as well as to their constituent materials
+ A record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
+ Ability to hold a DOE Q security clearance.

Desired:

+ Ability to formulate creative approaches to solving challenging materials-related technical problems across a range of scales
+ Successful experience developing and executing proposal-driven research projects and attracting extramural research funding
+ Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary teams and actively collaborating with experimentalists
+ Experience in relevant laboratory methods and experiment
+ Experience in applying advanced machine-learning (ML) tools and methods to fundamental materials science R&D, and development or discovery of new materials.

Department Description:

The Quantum & Electronic Materials Department (08345) advances the state-of-knowledge in quantum and electronic properties of materials, and collaborates closely with other domain knowledge experts to use these advances to enable and accelerate development of emerging non-conventional computing, communication, quantum information devices, and sensors. Research efforts include: advanced materials and device concepts for ultra-low-energy computing and sensing, nano-electronics, quantum topological materials, quantum-confined low-dimensional systems, advanced materials and device concepts for neuromorphic computing, materials synthesis and device fabrication, and computational and theoretical condensed matter physics.
