Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nations security!

We are seeking a material scientist or physicist eager to develop expertise in radiation/matter interactions, conduct experiments in radiation effects in materials and lead radiation-environment qualification activities for materials, components and systems. You will work in a collaborative environment with a diverse team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Propose, design and execute experiments at flagship national test facilities, such as the Z Machine (Sandia National Laboratories) and National Ignition Facility (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory).
+ Experiments may range from fundamental investigations into the behavior of materials in radiation environments to the response of components at higher levels of product integration to meet technical and programmatic objectives for a variety of customers.
+ Team with other specialists, including those in computational modeling and simulation, to plan experiments, analyze results, and to present new insights, observations or qualification evidence

Some travel will be required, for experiments, project meetings and conferences.

+ PhD in Materials Science, physics, ChE, Nuclear Engineering, ME, chemistry or a related field
+ Experience analyzing and presenting scientific results as demonstrated through conference presentation and/or peer-reviewed publication of results
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

+ Formal education and/or experience in materials
+ Experience interrogating radiation effects phenomena, materials in extreme environments, or product environmental testing
+ Knowledge of the interaction of radiation with matter
+ Experience translating product requirements into test specifications or working with product development teams
+ Experience in conducting experiments at radiation facilities (x-ray, gamma or neutron)
+ Experience collaborating with others to model experiments or material environmental responses
+ Experience developing research ideas, submitting proposals, establishing collaborations, organizing research teams and/or reporting progress to sponsors
+ Experience in project management or participating in research teams

Department Description:

The prime work of the Radiation Effects Research and Radiation Effects Experimentation Department (1344) is within the Radiation Effects Sciences (RES) program which spans research, development, and application in the field of radiation hardening design and qualification. All radiation effects from nuclear detonations (x rays, gamma rays, neutrons, electromagnetic pulse, etc.), natural and enhanced space environments, and in situ radiation are included.Within the RES program the Radiation Effects Research Department has a central role in transient radiation effects in electronics and optoelectronics, and major responsibility for mechanical response of materials and components, including thermal, structural, and shock responses. Work includes developing x-ray and electron beam sources for electrical and mechanical response experiments and other RES program needs; developing and implementing radiation and material response diagnostics and instrumentation; conducting phenomenological electrical and material response discovery experiments; obtaining electrical and material properties for computational model input; and measuring electrical and material responses for model validation. Additionally, a major role for the department is to provide design consultation and qualification assessment of nuclear weapon hardware to Sandia's system, component design, and production groups.
