We are seeking a hardworking and experienced scientist/engineer to manage the Sandia staff and contract associates assessing the long-term performance of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) 10,000 years into the future. To do this you will use a suite of computer codes, labelled performance assessment. You will have the opportunity to provide leadership in demonstrating Sandias expertise in repository science and compliance analysis, and to further our international and domestic reputation while using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. You will also play a key leadership role in cultivating integration between your department and other departments at Sandia to develop and improve Sandias overall performance assessment capability, Sandias repository licensing infrastructure, and repository science for customers beyond the WIPP customer. Similarly, you will closely collaborate with other departments within the group, since their results and analyses are typically used to generate inputs to performance assessment calculations undertaken in your department. Another close collaboration you will foster will be with the Los Alamos National Laboratory WIPP waste data collection team, as this information is used directly in your departments analyses.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Guide the work of the department, leading and managing members of the workforce, within the organization, including hiring, professional development, and assessment and performance management, consistent with the mission of the organization;
+ Promote excellence by managing and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements;
+ Exhibit technical integrity to your staff and expect and reward the exhibition of technical integrity on their part;
+ Apply organizational knowledge and experience to independently judge work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations;
+ Ensure that customer needs are satisfied through the creation of trust-based relationships;
+ Enable your staff to generate significant portions of periodic WIPP Compliance Recertification Applications;
+ Integrate multi-disciplinary technical elements to assess impact on long-term repository performance stemming from DOEs periodic changes to WIPPs physical configuration or waste stream content;
+ Represent the Sandia repository science and performance assessment work in technical exchanges with the EPA, partners, peer review panels, with Sandia and other national laboratory colleagues, and in technical conferences and other meetings.

Required:

+ Bachelors and Masters degrees in a relevant STEM discipline (computer science, engineering, or mathematics) plus eight or more years of relevant experience;
+ Two or more years of demonstrated experience leading a team in scientific endeavors;
+ Experience in the performance and/or management of computer simulation and modeling of complex systems;
+ Demonstrated ability to conduct technical work under close scrutiny from Federal project managers and other government partners;
+ Demonstrated capability to lead science-based projects and a consistent track record of deliveries on significant R&D projects;
+ Pre-Management Training Requirement: selected applicant will need to complete the Pre-Management Curriculum (HR100.2.10) within one year of selection;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

+ Demonstrated interpersonal skills including teamwork and communication with internal and external customers;
+ Skill in highlighting and applying pertinent Sandia technical accomplishments and expertise;
+ Demonstrated people management skills which includes developing, coaching, mentoring, attracting, and retaining technically competent and productive staff;
+ A strong dedication to quality assurance.

Department Description:

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the world's only licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the disposal of transuranic nuclear waste. WIPP operates under the direction of DOEs Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO). Sandia National Laboratories provides scientific advice to CBFO in many areas, including modifications to the repository's operating permits, periodic recertification of the repository, and on-going monitoring of repository performance against regulatory requirements.

The Performance Assessment and Decision Analysis Department. The department has been instrumental over many years in providing analyses relied on by the DOE and by regulatory agencies to make important design, operational, and compliance decisions, especially as they pertain to WIPP. Technical staff capabilities presently embodied by these staff and contract associates include Geomechanics, Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Subsurface Flow and Transport, Computer Science, Material Science, Geo-hydrology, and Regulatory Compliance.

Security Clearance:
