We are seeking a creative and hardworking R&D, Chemical Engineer in the application of molecular simulation to geochemical problems (e.g., gas transport through complex organic media, clay swelling and aggregation, cation adsorption to mineral surfaces and nanoparticles, clay-organic interfaces). You will address questions of societal and scientific import using molecular simulation; readily infer the macroscopic significance of nanoscale phenomena; and exercise directed analytical skills. You will guide your own research by formulating research questions, solving them, and writing clear and concise publications based on your results. Proficiency is needed in large-scale reactive-transport modeling (i.e., PFLOTRAN for repository science). You will need to show a publications record indicative of these skills and of technical productivity, including publications in high impact journals. You will need to exhibit maturity in selecting important geochemical questions to address with molecular simulations - i.e., using molecular simulations as a tool to provide ground breaking insight to field-scale repository and energy problems.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Formulate a creative molecular modeling research plan to solve unusual problems in subsurface geochemistry, requiring expertise in diverse fields from CO2 sequestration to nuclear waste disposal;
+ Work within multi-disciplinary teams;
+ Conduct modeling and analysis in molecular simulations;
+ Write technical publications for high impact journals.


+ PhD in Chemical Engineering, Geochemistry, Physical Chemistry or a related field;
+ Expertise in Interfacial geochemistry of nanopores and molecular behavior in subsurface environments;
+ Experience in molecular simulations;
+ Peer-reviewed publications, including publications in high impact journals, indicative of experience level and expertise in molecular simulation.


+ Molecular simulations with applications to geological storage of carbon dioxide, reactive transport modeling experience with applications to spent fuel waste disposal, and experience in modeling CH4-CO2-H2O interactions in shale nanopores under reservoir conditions.
+ Proven familiarity and expertise in: Molecular simulations: LAMMPS, GROMACS, TOWHEE, FORTRAN, VMD;
+ Reactive transport modeling: PFLOTRAN, GWB, CUBIT, PARAVIEW, PYTHON.

Department Description:

The Geochemistry Department has expertise in three areas: 1) molecular-scale modeling, 2) experimental geochemistry, and 3) applied environmental/chemical engineering. We tackle geosciences-related problems with an application for carbon sequestration, unconventional oil and gas recovery, nuclear waste management, and environmental remediation. In addition, we reach beyond the subsurface environment looking at nuclear weapons applications and air-borne contaminant detection and removal. Program focus is currently on chemical effects on fracture initiation and propagation, heterogeneous redox chemistry on clay mineral surfaces, coupled geochemistry and geomechanics in shales, and permeable reactive barriers for soil radionuclide remediation. Computing facilities for molecular modeling include a cluster (CPU nodes, GPU nodes) maintained by the Geochemistry Department as well as the Sandia High Performance Computing. In addition, we have 3,000 square feet of laboratory space that includes the following analytical equipment: XRD, FTIR, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, TOF-MS, and SEM.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base.
