We are seeking a staff member to lead and support developing novel solutions for robotic, unmanned, mechatronic, and wearables systems for national security applications. The selected candidate will work as part of multidisciplinary science/engineering teams doing cutting edge research and technology development to support our nation’s security needs. This position requires a broad spectrum of skills in robotic autonomy, unmanned systems, mechatronics, and human wearables R&D.

On any given day, the selected applicant may be asked to:

+ Lead development of novel robotic systems
+ Demonstrate novel algorithms for autonomous behaviors for the control of various mechatronic systems
+ Support development of wearable robotic devices, exoskeletons, and prosthetics
+ Integrate hardware and software system solutions

Work will be conducted in a team environment devoted to developing and fielding novel robots and autonomous control systems. Work will include executing technical tasks with excellence and may include participating in the development of competitive funding proposals, and publishing results in peer reviewed journals.


+ Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical / Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or similar, with a focus on algorithm development, perception, or control systems
+ Experience in one or more of the following:

- Developing and implementing heuristic, optimization based, or machine-learning based autonomous perception, object recognition or decision-making systems
- Developing and implementing novel mechatronic systems
- Developing models and state equations for dynamic systems
- Developing novel control algorithms for dynamic systems
- Implementing control algorithms on mechatronic hardware
- Developing robotic, unmanned, or autonomous systems
- Developing and testing of electric or electronic systems
+ Simulation, algorithm development and control system design experience in Matlab or similar
+ Algorithm implementation or programming experience (C, C++, Matlab, Python or similar languages)
+ Can obtain a DOE Q clearance


+ Experience in leading the development of algorithms with relevance to automated or autonomous system behaviors, advanced perception, or control systems
+ Experience creating, developing, or leading novel, miniature to meso-scale mechatronic system R&D
+ Experience developing and/or testing wearable robotic devices, exoskeletons, and prosthetics
+ Research experience with musculoskeletal biomechanics, including human subject testing in a motion analysis laboratory and/or data processing in OpenSIM or similar environments
+ Familiarity with optimization methods
+ Experience with estimation systems
+ Experience with navigation, localization and mapping algorithms
+ Experience in the development of distributed, networked control systems
+ Experience with human-machine interaction
+ Ability to work with a team
+ Commitment to applying safe work practices and procedures
+ Current DOE L or Q clearance

Department Description:

Our group specializes in autonomous operations of unmanned systems, advanced controls, miniature mechanical design and fabrication, advanced drive system development, and the human/machine interface. We advance security by providing next generation unmanned systems and autonomy solutions. We have established leadership in this field through capabilities such as active, autonomous perception, distributed control of heterogeneous systems, real-time control of dynamic systems, miniature mechatronic design and fabrication, and advanced human-machine interface R&D. With state-of-the-art facilities and the creation of a formal UAS Aviation Operations Unit (UAOU), which will coordinate all UAS work across Sandia, we are using subject matter experience in unmanned systems R&D to design and deploy systems to address critical national security challenges. The department conducts numerous active research, development and application projects for a variety of customers, both internal to Sandia and across the national security establishment, and collaborates heavily with partners across Sandia. The department is one of five in the High Consequence Automation and Robotics Group within the Weapon and Force Protection Center.

Security Clearance:
