We are seeking an R&D Manager to lead a diverse team engaged in research, development and application of software engineering and design\. Are you passionate about collaborating with leading authorities and developing future experts in this area? If so, you will want to consider this opportunity\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Ensure a culture that promotes safety and security, as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment
+ Team with staff and fellow managers within Center 1400 and throughout Sandia as well as other labs, university partners and sponsors to deliver on current commitments
+ Craft the future for the department by guiding the team developing these technologies
+ Collaborate as an integral member of a cohesive management team in developing strategic direction and executing that strategy
+ Work with the team to maintain and grow an open research basis while connecting to the mission elements of the laboratory
+ Recruit, hire, mentor and develop staff members
+ Handle day\-to\-day management activities for the team
+ Some travel for business

Required:

+ Bachelors degree in a relevant science, technical, engineerng or mathematics \(STEM\) discipline plus eight or more years relevant experience
+ Experience in project or management leadership
+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance

Desired:

+ Minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience
+ Master's or PhD in a relevant discipline
+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences
+ Knowledge of scientific software engineering, including research methodologies, maintenance and support, Agile methods, and complimentary areas \(e\.g\., computational algorithms, applied mathematics, high performance computing, etc\.\)
+ Expertise, experience and relationships in one or more of the relevant mission domains and/or customer/stakeholder communities \(Nuclear Deterrence, Advanced Science and Technology, National Security Programs\)
+ Experience establishing and maintaining diverse, teaming relationships
+ Evidence of leadership at the Laboratory or in a similar external environment and high potential for further leadership development
+ Experience crafting and executing strategies as part of a diverse and cohesive team of managers
+ Ability to connect to Sandia's mission elements and transition research into use
+ Experience leading or contributing to complex software projects with dual mission/open use
+ Experience recruiting, hiring, and mentoring staff members
+ Active DOE Q clearance

Department Description:

The Software Engineering and Research Department \(1424\), a new department within the Center for Computing Research, is leading the strategic goal of furthering the substantiation of software engineering as an engineering discipline\. This dynamic team of experts conducts fundamental and applied research, development and application in software engineering, design, and the processes and principles that underlie the establishment of quality, rigor, correctness, and repeatability in the implementation of algorithms and applications in software for high consequence applications\. The team focuses on applications for scientific computing, computational algorithms, large scale data analytics, and operating system components such as run\-time systems and application programming interfaces\. A key element of the work is teaming with application and algorithm researchers to establish a strong foundation in software methodologies, state\-of\-the\-art practices, and maintenance and support for production codes and libraries\. The department works closely with other organizations across Sandia and with external collaborators\.

The department is part of the Extreme Scale Computing group, which unifies computer engineering and science disciplines to advance highly scalable and performant computing architectures based on current conventional, as well as future non\-conventional, technologies

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
