Our team is seeking a Manager to lead a diverse R&D team developing state-of-the-art capabilities in machine learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and data analytics. On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Team with staff and fellow managers within Center 1400 and throughout Sandia as well as university partners and sponsors to deliver on current commitments
+ Craft the future for the department by guiding the team developing these technologies
+ Collaborate as an integral member of a results oriented management team in developing strategic direction and executing that strategy
+ Work with the team to maintain and grow an open research basis while connecting to the mission elements of the laboratory
+ Handle day-to-day management activities for the team
+ Recruit, hire, mentor and develop staff members
+ Lead the Computing & Information Sciences Trusted AI Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Research Campaign, which consists of 10-15 cross organizational LDRD projects focused on AI and machine learning
+ Lead the Advanced Simulation & Computing (ASC) Advanced Machine Learning Initiative at Sandia, which consists of 7 cross organizational projects focused on AI and machine learning

Required:

+ PhD degree in computer science, mathematics, or other field related to computing or mathematical modeling
+ Eight or more years scientific or engineering experience
+ Experience in scientific or management leadership
+ Proven interpersonal skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at professional and scientific conferences
+ Current, active L or Q clearance

Desired:

+ Two or more years experience leading multidisciplinary, technically diverse research teams
+ Knowledge of machine learning, artificial intelligence, graph and data analytics, as well as complimentary areas (e.g., high performance computing architectures, neuromorphic computing)
+ Expertise, experience and relationships in one or more of the relevant mission domains or customer/partner communities (Nuclear Deterrence, National Security Programs and Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation)
+ Eagerness to expand the departments work internally and externally
+ Experience establishing and maintaining diverse, teaming relationships
+ Experience with recruiting, hiring, and mentoring staff members
+ Experience crafting and executing strategies as part of a diverse and cohesive team of managers
+ Evidence of leadership at the Laboratory or in a similar external environment and high potential for further leadership development
+ Ability to connect to Sandia's mission elements and transition research into use
+ Experience leading or contributing to complex software projects with dual mission/open use

Department Description:

The Machine Intelligence Department (1462) conducts fundamental and applied research and development in the areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, autonomy, graph analytics, text analytics, and systems/social modeling. In the areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence and autonomy, the department seeks to exploit new physics-informed algorithms that are explainable and highly reliable and require very little training data. In the areas of graph analytics, text analytics, and systems/social modeling, the department builds temporal geospatial algorithms and software with broad applicability to cyber, remote sensing, and nonproliferation missions. The department works closely with other organizations across Sandia and with external collaborators.

The department is part of the Enhanced Decision Making group, which seeks to bring together multiple fields including scientific visualization, discrete mathematics, optimization, scalable high performance computing algorithms, and computer science to inform high consequence decision-making.

Security Clearance:
