The Geophysical Detection Technologies R&D Department at Sandia National Laboratories is soliciting applications for an experienced systems engineer (SE) to be the SE lead and represent SNL as a member of a multi-laboratory leadership team responsible for the successful execution of a large-scale, field-experiment. This experiment supports a program incorporating field, laboratory, and modeling studies aimed at enhancing the nations capabilities for monitoring underground nuclear explosions anywhere in the world. You will lead the technical development of scientific requirements into the design requirements of this complex, large-scale, multi-disciplinary, field experiment. In this role, you will be responsible for engaging with a team, composed of participants from multiple national laboratories, to develop, maintain, and communicate a technical baseline for the experiment. Additionally, you will be responsible for partnering with subject matter experts throughout the DOE complex, including both scientists and engineers, to solicit input for the technical basis of the experimental requirements. This role will span the entire project lifecycle from product definition to retirement over four years. You will apply systems engineering principles to fit the risks and needs of this experiment. This position will require moderate travel.

Over time, you will be expected to work with cross-disciplinary teams to identify and conceptually develop new technical work within Sandia mission program area. This may be accomplished through participation and partnerships in future proposal calls. You will be expected to increase both Sandias and your own impact and standing in these programs by producing high-quality results. + Masters Degree in Systems Engineering or another technical discipline with a Systems Engineering certification plus 7 years of relevant experience or equivalent
+ Participation (team member or lead) in integrating large complex systems or experiments
+ Willingness to travel up-to ~25% of the year, with extended trips possible


+ Current clearance (DOE or DOD)
+ Ability to obtain a SCI clearance
+ Demonstrated experience integrating requirements designed by multiple subject matter experts
+ Demonstrated ability to translate scientific requirements into engineering requirements
+ Demonstrated experience with all aspects of a projects life-cycle
+ Demonstrated experience executing off-site field work
+ Demonstrated customer engagement and influence
+ Demonstrated ability to work with and provide leadership to a multi-disciplinary team
+ Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts
+ Background experience in geosciences, geophyisics, seismology, signal processing
+ Knowledge of Systems Engineering software tools, such as DOORs
+ Strong organizational, written, oral, and presentation skills, including the ability effectively communicate scientific/engineering concepts and results at multiple levels (highly technical to general audience)
+ Ability to work effectively both individually and as a team member
+ Demonstrated professional mentoring of others
+ Demonstrated ability deliver high-quality results on-time and on-schedule under challenging circumstances

Department Description:

The department advances analysis and algorithms for remote sensing support of the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS), Nuclear Effects for Survivability and Consequence Management, and Nuclear Forensics. Missions such as treaty verification, non-proliferation and nuclear force management, with respect to nuclear detonation detection, are supported by our modeling and software products using optical, particle (NGX), and radio-frequency phenomenologies. The organization serves as a laboratories R&D resource for nuclear signatures modeling, simulation, and analysis expertise.
