R&D Systems Engineer - Radiation Qualification (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a motivated R&D Systems Engineer to join our diverse team in the W88 ALT 370 Technical Basis and Qualification department. Are you a sharp engineer who has an interest in radiation effects? Do you have a special interest in defense and national security? Are you energized by the thought of contributing towards a new program in a National R&D Laboratory? In this exciting and dynamic role you will be learning and performing a number of engineering functions in the area of radiation effects, from helping craft design concepts, to developing and testing actual hardware, to participating in a larger community of SMEs who set the standards for radiation effects. Your activities will be focused on not only the W88 ALT 370 radiation qualification program, but future modernization programs as well. They will range from:

+ Learning opportunities about radiation effects (natural and man-made environments) theories, testing and analysis
+ Facilitation, coordination and collaboration with the radiation facility owners to ensure on-time testing and data delivery
+ Interactions with a diverse set of other system engineers, subject matter experts, and product realization teams across the laboratory
+ Interactions with diverse set of customers and stakeholders
+ Partnership with the design team
+ Support of program development activities
+ Support of other activities developing and improving weapon system radiation qualification concepts and activities

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop and execute the required qualification testing and analysis
+ Interact with and define test definition for facility owners
+ Report to SNL management, customers and stakeholders on status, accomplishments and issues
+ Coordinate and support qualification activities to include assembly, testing, and troubleshooting

External interfaces include the National Nuclear Security Administration, DoD collaborators (USN), Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lockheed Martin Space, and the Kansas City National Security Center (KCNSC) production plant.

Internal interfaces include various S&T, systems, component, design definition, test and evaluation, and computational simulation organizations.


+ Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related engineering field


+ Strong analytical and laboratory experience
+ Demonstrated understanding of Transient Radiation Effects on Electronics (TREE), Box IEMP, SGEMP, single even upset, neutron, gamma and x-ray effects;
+ Experience with Hardened Electronics Radiation Effects Technology (HEART) meeting and/or IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC);
+ Experience in various coding languages;
+ Experience in system engineering of complex systems;
+ Experience with NW component or system design, development or production;
+ Demonstrated ability to understand and work with a diverse set of technologies;
+ Ability to work independently and in a team environment showing initiative and leadership;
+ Motivation to work with a large integrated Systems team with broad interaction;
+ Must be able to apply strong interpersonal and communications skills working with a diverse team ranging from skilled laborers to PhD engineers/scientist;
+ Demonstrated ability to plan and execute technical work;
+ Ability to negotiate competing requirements to give the best system-level outcome;
+ Ability to discover, understand and articulate constraints, options, paths-forward;
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills;
+ Commitment to operational safety, security and quality;
+ Some travel will be required to support development, test and program needs.

Department Description:

The Weapons Program Integration Department provides program management and integration support to SNL Systems, Subsystem, and Component project teams and the NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex (NWC).
