We are seeking a highly motivated R&D S&E Systems Engineer to become part of the Air Delivered Weapons team.Our team is responsible for the development, execution, and data analysis of multimillion dollar instrumented laboratory and flight test units.We partner with other organizations to design innovative and creative testing approaches, in addition to formulating root cause analyses for data anomalies.We serve as a Systems engineering lead; understanding and assessing the technical performance of the weapon to provide data and information throughout the lifecycle of a weapon system to support and enable stockpile decisions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead complex technical efforts related to planning and executing testing of the nuclear stockpile.
+ Generate or modify analysis code to evaluate data sets from stockpile tests.
+ Deliver written or oral communication to customers and stakeholders.
+ Demonstrate technical breadth and depth by providing information in a team setting to develop a cohesive explanation for observed behavior in data sets.
+ Collaborate with or lead teams that include internal and external personnel (i.e., National Nuclear Security Administration customers, DoD customers, Los Alamos National Laboratory, DoD contractors, Kansas City National Security Campus, and Pantex production plants)

Moderate travel will be required to fulfill the duties of this position.


+ Bachelors Degree in a STEM discipline with five years relevant experience; or a Masters Degree in a STEM discipline with 2 years relevant experience.
+ Active US DOE Q security clearance or DoD equivalent.


+ Two or more years' science or engineering experience in relevant government or industry programs delivering large complex systems - contributions in domains such as: modeling and simulation, software development, design and realization of products that include electrical components, or product testing and evaluation;
+ Experience writing analytical software to support data analysis on large data sets (but not necessarily Big Data);
+ Demonstrated critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to develop creative technical solutions;
+ Eagerness to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment;
+ Demonstrated communication and teaming skills;
+ Ability to bring diverse technical perspectives, experience, and interests to the group
+ Ability to combine the inputs of multiple subject matter experts (process engineers, technicians, scientists, engineers) to arrive at a technically sound and implementable solution, document, or decision.

Department Description:

The primary objective of our organization is to assure that the US nuclear weapon stockpile remains safe, secure, and reliable as the underlying basis of the US nuclear deterrent capability.

Department members provide the technical and programmatic leadership for system-level laboratory and flight testing programs for stockpile air delivered weapon systems (B61-3/4/7/11, B83-1 and W80-1). In support of weapon modernization programs, we collaborate to develop requirements for the weapon, future testers, and new data analysis software. Ultimately, we provide engineering support for the life-cycle of the weapons, including: special studies, testing and data analysis, and leading root cause investigations that can stem from testing. Conducting the data analysis and reporting on weapon performance requires a thorough understanding of the technical performance of the weapon and data collection systems. We are responsible for communicating test results to our customers and stakeholders through presentations or written reports. Each department member is encouraged to pursue continuous improvement in personal technical capabilities, teaming skills, and innovative processes and procedures to be able to effectively manage a growing myriad of increasingly complex technical challenges.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
