We are seeking an R&D Science & Engineering Systems Research and Analysis professional with cybersecurity or radiological/nuclear security domain expertise, who will take a broad systems perspective to informing strategies, priorities, and requirements for technology solutions\. The successful applicant will join our multidisciplinary team of systems analysts, whose studies provide decision insight to customers in ill\-defined or complex multi\-domain problem areas\. You will apply critical thinking using a diversity of technical skills and expertise, and effectively communicate options, insights, and trade\-offs to customers in a concise way that enables action\. Provide technical depth and insight in particular to analysis problems in the nuclear and radiological security domain, to enable connectivity between operational organizations, and Sandias broad and deep research and development teams\. Formally define problems, formulate requirements, develop technical approaches, gather information from a variety of sources, and apply analytical methods to design and objectively evaluate proposed solutions\. Familiarity with relevant analysis tools and techniques would be beneficial\. Access to knowledge and data in this arena will require a security clearance\. Travel is expected to meet with sponsors and to support successful execution of programs\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Lead projects and also contribute effectively on research teams;

Work with customers to understand needs and propose solutions;

Conduct innovative research; and

Present results as appropriate at open conferences or classified meetings

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**

Advanced technical degree or significant equivalent experience\. Technical knowledge and competencies appropriate to the position\. Thorough knowledge of and applied experience with scientific, mathematical, and engineering methods\. Thorough knowledge of and experience with designing, planning, and executing projects\. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience implementing Sandia policies affecting projects and initiatives\. Demonstrated ability to team across all disciplines\. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex system issues and ideas to customers and stakeholders at all levels of government within the United States as well as internationally\.


+ Masters degree in relevant discipline, or equivalent:

+ Higher degree \(PhD\) in relevant discipline; or
+ Engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development\.

+ Evidence of relevant research expertise in the form of technical publications, presentations, software, and/or knowledge of applications
+ Strong record of academic performance\.
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate well in informal \(one\-on\-one\) and formal \(seminar\) environments\.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted Q\-level security clearance


+ Bachelors degree plus at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a Master's or Ph\.D\. in science, technology, engineering, math, economics, or public policy\. The following would be beneficial but are not required:
+ Expertise in one or more of the following: design and analysis of complex systems, decision analysis, risk analysis, international security and policy, expert elicitation, facilitation, communications with non\-technical audiences, data analytics, machine learning, and operational or policy guidance development\.
+ Experience working in the radiological/nuclear security or cybersecurity domain\.
+ Ability to work on weapons systems analyses\.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI\-level clearance\.
+ Evidence of professional service and leadership to the community, such as service on program committees, workshop organization, and/or editorial or review work\.
+ A proven ability to frame and tackle complex and/or ill\-defined multidisciplinary problems\.
+ Background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real\-world data, especially large data sets\.

Department Description:

Department 8712 is part of a six department System Analysis and Engineering Group \(8710\) in the Sandia/California DHS & Defense Systems Center\. We provide national leaders with reliable, unbiased and comprehensive information on viable engineering and strategy options, and on the effectiveness, risks, benefits, and potential unintended consequences of those options\. We are a multidisciplinary group with a strong science and engineering emphasis, skilled at applying a broad systems perspective to national and global security challenges\. Work in 8710 is focused on a broad range of topics in national security including nuclear weapons, homeland security, and transportation energy\. Homeland security work includes analyses, simulations, and prototype technology deployments which address defense against biological, nuclear, chemical, and radiological terrorism; and emerging cybersecurity threats\. Nuclear weapons work includes stockpile studies, surety systems analysis, cost estimation, and future stockpile planning\. Projects range from months to years in duration, with teams forming in dynamic collaborations across the Group and with organizations throughout the laboratory to draw upon world\-class technical expertise\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.
