We are currently seeking a highly motivated R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer to join our team. Are you passionate about your work and want to utilize state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for the nation's security?

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support the daily operations of the pressure, vacuum and leaks projects within the Primary Standards Lab by:

- Assuring the quality and efficient calibration of customer assets.
- Assisting in troubleshooting of measurement system issues.
- Providing technical guidance for calibration work of metrologists in the lab.
- Responding to customer inquiries and consulting with customers on their measurement needs.
- Keeping lab documentation current.
- Supporting other engineering work as assigned by the project lead

+ Improve performance and quality for measurement systems capabilities in the lab.
+ Apply knowledge, experience and technical capability in measurement and calibration science related to the physical disciplines of pressure, vacuum and leaks and the related systems, equipment, methods, and procedures.
+ Conduct/support research and development of new measurement technologies and techniques related to the labs capabilities in accordance with strategy set by the PSL and the project lead.
+ Team with other PSL engineers and technologists to develop and execute plans and solve measurement and quality issues.
+ Mentor and coordinate activities of technologists and student interns, including technical training, scheduling, and workload management.
+ Develop/maintain equipment and facilities requests for future improvements.
+ Travel on a limited basis to support NNSA technical surveillances and related activities.

Required:

+ Bachelors degree in relevant discipline, or equivalent engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.

Desired:

+ Proven ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts, logic and reasoning to tackle complex problems.
+ Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, synthesize findings, and cite sources appropriately.
+ Experience with Sandias Review and Approval process.
+ Experience operating and maintaining electro-mechanical equipment, including high-precision pressure, vacuum and gas leak systems used for primary and secondary standards calibration.
+ Demonstrated ability to complete the development and qualification of complex calibration systems, including all documentation meeting high-level technical, quality and ES&H requirements.
+ Experience with statistical methods of analysis and measurement uncertainty.
+ Bachelors degree in relevant STEM field.
+ Experience working with pressure, vacuum and/or gas leak systems in a calibration lab.
+ Self-starter who can work independently and with a team.
+ Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
+ Ability to apply knowledge and ideas to solve engineering problems.
+ Experience with a broad application of instruments, assemblies, standards, and systems.
+ Experience working within a rigorous quality system in lab environment.
+ Desire to learn new skills as required and develop expertise in areas that may be unfamiliar.
+ Extensive experience using Excel, Visual Basic, COMPASS Software (Fluke) and/or LabView.
+ Previous experience using Maximo for work tracking.
+ Demonstrated ability to use PSLs Uncertainty Calculator to determine sensitivity coefficients for measurement uncertainty analyses.
+ Experience following ISO 17025, Z540, QC-1 or other quality assurance programs in a high quality/high rigor environment.
+ Experience in developing methods, processes, technical work documents and procedures.
+ Already possess a DOE Q clearance.

Department Description:

Department 9144, Primary Physical Standards, provides calibration support to the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including support for SNL research and production organizations. Department 9144 includes multiple projects and consists of parameters such as flow, humidity, leaks, vacuum, radiation, optics, temperature and dimensional measurement. Primary Physical Standards, maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards, and assists in technical guidance of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories. The overall calibration program is accredited by the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program.
