If so, you may be the highly motivated engineer we seek to join the Connectors and LACs department, organization 2631, as a Design Engineer.

In this role, you will be working on a team to help design, test, and qualify Connectors in support of new and legacy systems. You will solve mechanical engineering problems to design connectors to meet challenging environmental and reliability requirements. A strong emphasis is place on use of Finite Element Analysis modeling to prevent defects and ensure design margin. You will partner with engineers in our department, systems organizations, external vendors, and the production agency at KCNSC on a regular basis, so some travel will be required.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Utilize engineering principals in the research, design, and development of Connectors
+ Team with the Production Agency and vendors to incorporate defect prevention and design for manufacturability principals.
+ Develop, document, and execute project and test plans.
+ Connect with customers and management on the status of projects.
+ Read and interpret mechanical drawings

Required:

+ Bachelors degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline; or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
+ Experience crafting technical documents, reports, and presentations.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with design, procurement and fielding of electrical or mechanical components.
+ Knowledge of Military or other industrial standards for electrical components.
+ Experience with reading, interpreting, and applying GD&T markings and principals
+ Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
+ Experience using modeling software for mechanical design.
+ Proven track record to work on cross-organizational/multidisciplinary teams
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
+ Proven technical project management experience
+ Experience working in a production environment or partnering with a production agency
+ Knowledge of Engineering Authorizations, the NNSA Technical Business Practices, and the Sandia Realize Product Subsystem procedures
+ Experience working with the Kansas City National Security Campus

Department Description:

The Connectors & Lightning Arrestor Connector (LAC) Department designs, develops, tests, and qualifies hermetic, non-hermetic, specialty, and lightning arrestor connectors, and conducts Component and Material Evaluation (CME) of Stockpile Lightning Arrestor Connectors (LACs), delivering comprehensive, accurate, and timely assessments of stockpile Lightning Arrestor Connectors. We use the Realize Product Subsystem (RPSS) to realize Mark Quality product that covers the complete product realization cycle of requirements, design, development, specification, qualification, procurement, delivery and stockpile support through our partners at the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC). We employ defect-prevention strategies to gain an understanding of design margin during the development cycle. The department's capabilities include the ability to address multiple challenging requirements related to meeting high reliability numbers over extremely long life, radiation tolerance, nuclear safety requirements, and size & weight restrictions.

Security Clearance:
