We are seeking a R&D S&E, Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop, implement, test and support the fielding of novel aided inertial navigation systems for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and other airborne systems.
+ Integration of navigation sensors including, but not limited to, inertial measurement units (IMUs), Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment, barometric altimeters, magnetic sensors, and Attitude Heading Reference Systems (ARHS).Sensor integration will require understanding relevant interface control documents (ICDs) and implementing software and hardware interfacing between sensor and real-time embedded software.
+ Sensor and embedded hardware testing, diagnosis, and configuration.
+ Developing and maintaining both legacy and new real-time and analysis software applications.
+ Conducting navigation performance and system analysis.
+ Model and simulate navigation sensors and systems.


Masters degree plus five years of relevant experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related degree or a PhD in those fields.

Relevant experience in one or more of the following technical areas: embedded real-time systems, navigation, estimation, dynamics, or controls.

Experience with simulation tools such as Matlab, Simulink.

Willingness to support moderate travel in support of flight testing of vehicle prototypes.

Ability to obtain and maintain a required US DOE Q security clearance.


Documented coursework completion in the field of embedded real-time systems, navigation, estimation, dynamics, and controls

Working knowledge of real-time inertial navigation systems and hardware sensor integration

Demonstrated software development skills using C and Object-Oriented programming language such as C++ or Java.

Strong background in Aerospace Engineering and Spacecraft Dynamics relating to the implementation of real time digital simulations.

Knowledge of Kalman filter theory and signal processing techniques.

Experience with software configuration management and regression testing

Hands-on experience developing 6DOF simulations.

Digital computer methods for numerical solutions of partial differential equations.

General background in Systems Engineering concepts.

Writing skills demonstrated through professional publications and presentations

Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

Department Description:

The Navigation, Pointing, and Controls (NPC) Department at Sandia supports a diverse set of customers and technologies and currently has exciting opportunities available. The department specializes in inertial navigation using inertial measurement units (IMUs) and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, GPS-Denied and GPS-Degraded navigation, ultra-accurate position and velocity measurements for synthetic aperture radars (SAR), gimbal pointing with micro-radian accuracy for airborne and space remote sensing, modeling and simulation of space and earth based navigation and tracking systems, and a variety of controls problems. The department includes personnel with expertise in navigation, guidance, estimation, Kalman filters, controls, inertial devices, signal processing, embedded systems and many others. Some of the work areas include: GPS-denied and GPS-Degraded navigation, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle GNC algorithm development, hypersonic vehicle GNC algorithm development, ground vehicle navigation, missile flight trajectory and attitude reconstruction, and HWIL/SWIL simulators.
