Sandias Autonomous Sensing and Controls department is seeking an engineer to develop Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms for a broad range of applications such as multi-agent games, learning-based control, and real-time tracking. The successful candidate will have a proven background in applied research and should be comfortable balancing the time and deliverable commitments of multiple projects simultaneously.

Sandia has experts in diverse and very broad engineering and scientific domains. In this position, the successful candidate will collaborate with experts in sensors, signal processing, image processing, embedded systems; circuits; communication; navigation, guidance and control.

This position requires clear understanding of mission from customers; definition of work scope and requirements; development of models, solutions, qualification, and documentation; communicating to stakeholders; and delivering products to customers. Opportunities for technical and professional development will be encouraged and supported through collaboration and mentoring efforts.


+ MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Machine Learning, or closely related major plus one year of relevant industry experience; or a PhD in relevant STEM major.
+ Advanced-level courses in Machine Learning, or a course in Reinforcement Learning.
+ Solid knowledge of linear algebra and statistics/probability.
+ Proficiency in Python or similar high-level programming languages with appropriate machine learning, statistical, modeling, and engineering packages (such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-Learn, OpenAI Baselines, OpenAI Gym).
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

+ PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, or closely related STEM field.
+ Peer-reviewed publications.
+ A proven research record in Reinforcement Learning or Deep Learning.
+ Professional/significant experience in one or more of the following fields: Reinforcement Learning, Computer Vision, Navigation, Guidance and Control.
+ Experience with Deep Q Network, Convex Optimization, Proximal Policy Optimization, Generative Adversarial Network, Variational Autoencoder, Object Detection/ EfficientDet/YOLO/Feature Pyramid Networks; Segmentation/U-Net/V-Net; NLP, LSTM, or Recurrent Neural Networks.
+ Signal Processing.
+ Gaussian Processes, Stochastic Reachability.
+ Proficiency in Linux; or High-Performance/Parallel/Vector Computing.
+ Good programming and documentation practices, such as version control, commenting, adherence to the PEP8 in Python.
+ Experience in presentation of technical results and proposal development.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.
+ Ability to work in an interdisciplinary teaming environment.
+ Ability to be self-directed and lead research projects.

Department Description:

Sandias Autonomous Sensing and Controls department is a diverse and highly collaborative R&D team delivering next-generation sensor systems and algorithms for: detecting and classifying targets; detecting and classifying signals or images; navigating, guiding, and controlling flight bodies, including computing trajectories for hypersonic flights; segmenting images. The departments unique expertise enables its sensors and control systems to have small size, weight, and power (SWaP). The sensors perform signal processing on-board in real time. They are networked and communicate with each other. They are autonomous, requiring no human intervention once deployed. The development encompasses concept, algorithm, prototyping, programming at all levels, testing and qualification, and hardware delivery. The customers are Defense (such as DTRA and DARPA) and Intelligence communities, Homeland Security, and other groups within Sandia, especially the flight Navigation, Guidance and Control group. The department supports national security missions including nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, battlefield and other critical high-reliability missions. The department collaborates extensively with other groups at Sandia, such as Optics, Embedded Systems, Synthetic Aperture Radar, Weapon Components, Geoscience, Robotics, and Satellites. The department staff also perform fundamental research under Sandias Laboratory Directed Research and Development program, including the $35M/5yrs Autonomy For Hypersonics Mission Campaign. The department is part of the Autonomy Enterprise within Sandias Integrated Military System Development Center.
