The Radar ISR Mission Engineering Department 05349, is seeking an experienced Radar Systems Engineer to join our motivated team of scientists who innovate technical solutions to address urgent challenges to our national security! This position will provide expertise in radar mission engineering, system hardware and software designs as well as radar system and phenomenology analysis.

On any given day you may be called on to:

+ Define, flow, and trace product requirements
+ Contribute to innovative System of Systems design, analysis and integration
+ Develop Concepts of Operation
+ Develop system architectures and perform trade-studies
+ Design electrical and/or mechanical systems
+ Develop test and qualification plans
+ Develop models for computational analysis of systems and processes
+ Lead or support formal program reviews
+ Shape or guide research activities to support program needs
+ Develop technical documentation
+ Troubleshoot problems and support anomaly resolution activities
+ Serve as a technical interface to other design and support organizations
+ Serve as a Sandia representative on multi-organizational project teams


+ Master of Science in Electrical Engineering plus 5 or more years of relevant experience
+ Experience with Radar System hardware, software, systems analysis, and/or scattering phenomenology
+ Strong background in the fundamentals of Synthetic Aperture Radar and Digital Signal Processing
+ Experience in the use of MATLAB/Simulink and/or similar numerical computation, high-level programming languages, as well as other programming languages (C/C++, Java, Python, Fortran, VB script, etc.)
+ Familiarity with and experience in use of RF/microwave test equipment and proper measurement techniques for network analysis, spectrum analysis, noise characterization, etc.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance


+ Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering plus 3 or more years of relevant experience
+ Strong background and experience in RF and applied electromagnetics
+ Python and C/C++ software experience
+ Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS)
+ Ability to understand mathematically complex systems, develop and analyze models, and draw concise conclusions from them
+ Experience with and passion for field test work
+ Experience interacting with military personnel and protocol
+ Active DOE Q-level or DOD TS clearance
+ Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment that sometimes requires quick problem-solving skills
+ Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams
+ Experience leading teams of people
+ Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively both internal and external to the organization
+ Comfort with a position of technical leadership and the responsibility to make decisions and support them
+ Experience in preparing, publishing and presenting technical information including patents
+ Good technical communications skills -- in conversation, presentation, and writing
+ Critical thinking skills and the ability to determine root cause failure in complex systems
+ Ability to work well with others with a positive attitude
+ Ability to travel

Department Description:

The Radar Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Mission Engineering Department, 5349, provides multidisciplinary system-level and mission engineering in support of ongoing and future Airborne and Space ISR missions. Missions can include multiple Radar sensor modes such as spotlight, dual-resolution, and video synthetic aperture radar (SAR); coherent change detection (CCD); multi-look imaging; and ground moving target indication (GMTI). The department is responsible for the design, oversight and delivery of full-up systems for a wide variety of applications, operating environments and customers.
