We are seeking a R&D, Nuclear Engineer working as the Verification and Validation Uncertainty Quantification Lead for the CASL Program\. Are you passionate about the work you do? On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Plan, conceive, conduct, or lead R&D for Sandia's customers and sponsors;
+ Direct systematic study toward a fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts, and discovers new approaches to achieve goals;
+ Create new understandings and capabilities by using the scientific method's hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods;
+ Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research;
+ Use engineering principles to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, systems, theories, or technologies; to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions;
+ Undertake development and possible technology transfer of solutions, products, principles or technology;
+ Undertake creative work, making systematic use of investigation or experimentation, to discover or revise knowledge of reality, and uses this knowledge to devise new applications\.


+ Bachelor's degree in a related discipline;
+ Advanced degree \(Master's or PhD\) in a Science or Engineering discipline \(e\.g\. nuclear, aerospace, mechanical, chemical\) or related discipline \(e\.g\. physics, applied mathematics, systems or operations research, etc\); or equivalent combination of education and experience;
+ Expertise in one of the following:

- Neutronics;
- Thermal Hydraulics;
- Heat Transfer;
- CFD;
- Fuel Performance;
+ Experience in computational modeling and simulation, including mathematical modeling and solution of coupled systems of partial differential equations \(PDEs\);
+ Ability to publish and to present state of the art technical work at technical conferences;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ Advanced degree \(Master's or PhD\) in a relevant Science or Engineering discipline \(e\.g\. nuclear, aerospace, mechanical, chemical\) or related discipline \(e\.g\. physics, applied mathematics, systems or operations research, etc\);
+ Experience in V&V/UQ methodology development;
+ Experience in the solid mechanics and/or structural dynamics discipline;
+ Experience with advanced codes for engineering simulation running on massively parallel computing clusters;
+ Experience with Monte Carlo and Latin Hypercube sampling for uncertainty quantification, reliability methods \(FORM, SORM\), sensitivity methods, and/or stochastic expansion methods;
+ Experience with code and solution verification for systems of partial differential equations;
+ Software development experience, including working with development teams using object\-oriented frameworks would be valuable;
+ Proven verbal and written communication skills;
+ Ability to interact well with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds\.

Department Description:

The Structural and Thermal Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories \(SNL\) supports a number of projects within the Nuclear Energy Safety Technologies Group\. The department and group focuses on analyses and experiments aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the nation's energy systems and infrastructure, with particular emphasis on civilian nuclear power\.

The Group's primary customer is the U\. S\. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Group serves as the SNL point\-of\-contact for the NRC\. Key technical areas for our NRC\-sponsored work include severe accident modeling, security analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, human reliability analysis, fire protection, and experiments\.

The Group also works extensively with other Sandia organizations and with the Department of Energy in a variety of areas related to risk and reliability analysis, human reliability analysis, structural analysis and modeling, fire protection, nonproliferation applications such as nuclear fuel cycle transparency monitoring, and experimental programs requiring remote locations and unique facilities\.

Technical staff capabilities include nuclear, mechanical and electrical engineering, mathematics and statistics, computer science, project management, and regulatory compliance\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
