We are seeking a R&D, Nuclear Engineer in the Risk and Reliability Analysis Department\. On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead research in various risk related technologies including traditional probabilistic risk assessment, dynamic probabilistic risk assessment, Bayesian statistics, and other work related to risk management;
+ Work in this department extends to understanding the risk basis for nuclear systems including nuclear reactors, radiation facilities, and other nuclear enterprises;
+ Work in this department is also rapidly growing to other critical infrastructures;
+ Work directly with customers to understand their needs and to help define our research topics;
+ Travel in this position including some potential international travel;
+ Deliver a technical report based on research including occasional experimentation using Sandia National Lab based experimental facilities\.


+ Master's or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Statistics, Reliability, or related Engineering degree; or Bachelor's degree and eight years experience working with risk related technologies for nuclear facilities;
+ Demonstrated proficiency in probability and statistics;
+ Demonstrated technical writing skills as evidenced through peer reviewed journals or through conference proceedings;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ Knowledge of nuclear power plant systems and operations;
+ Understanding of nuclear deterrence systems;
+ Understanding of fault and event tree structures;
+ Experience working in a top down approach to systems analysis;
+ Active DOE security clearance\.

Department Description:

The Risk and Reliability Analysis Department conducts risk related work to high consequence systems including nuclear facilities, critical infrastructures, advance energy systems, and other national security related work\. Work in this department currently supports research into probabilistic risk assessments and analysis, fire risk analysis, secure control system architectures, cyber risk research and other risk related work\. The focus of the department's efforts is on research related to operational risk and risk analysis of high\-consequence engineered systems to various threats including system failure mechanisms, reliability issues, cyber\-attack, kinetic threats, and naturally occurring events\. These systems include nuclear power reactors, energy systems, and international nuclear related risk\. The Department's client base includes the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other federal and non\-federal entities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
