You could be the Nuclear Engineer we are looking for to join our dynamic team and to support this program along with other nuclear safety research and development projects. You will aid in the execution of our program by evaluating and participating in nuclear safety analysis, system design, operational initiatives and improvements, and development of research projects to support nuclear safety.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ You will prepare or review criticality safety assessments, procedures and performing facility assessments
+ You will be responsible for conducting research to improve or develop new techniques and methods to support the NCS Program
+ You will conduct evaluations of radiation transport and shielding design; conducting computer modeling for nuclear applications; and supporting research and development projects
+ Implement, test, and apply software to support nuclear criticality safety validation
+ You will support and consult with Sandia facilities and other safety related programs on requirements and implementation

+ Bachelors and advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Nuclear Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or another relevant STEM discipline; or a Bachelors degree in relevant STEM discipline plus 3 years of relevant experience in lieu of an advanced degree
+ Experience in Nuclear Safety
+ Ability to obtain an U.S. DOE Q-clearance


+ Experience with Nuclear Safety Basis at DOE facilities
+ Experience with the preparation or review of Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs) and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs) for research reactors, critical assemblies, and non-reactor nuclear facilities at DOE Facilities
+ Experience with the use and/or development of nuclear safety modeling codes and techniques
+ Knowledge of and/or experience with reactor kinetics, physics, and thermo-hydraulic engineering calculations and modeling
+ Proficiency with the Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) process
+ Knowledge, understanding, and experience with nuclear facility codes and standards for design, construction, and operation
+ Experience with implementing and/or validating the implementation of safety controls
+ Operational experience with radiological and/or nuclear facilities
+ Experience with conduct of operations (ConOps) in nuclear facilities
+ Experience leading diverse teams and ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment
+ Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively both verbally and in writing
+ Ability to produce high-quality work, on schedule, with minimal supervision
+ Experience collaborating with outside technical organizations such as ANS and EFCOG
+ Current, active U.S. DOE L or Q-clearance

Department Description:

The Nuclear Safety Analysis Department (Org. 1383), located in Technical Area V (TA-V) at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), is responsible for ensuring that risks associated with operating TA-V nuclear facilities are analyzed, communicated, and accepted by the governing authorities. This involves selecting and evaluating nuclear safety controls to ensure protection of the general public, workers, visitors, and the TA-V staff. In addition, the Department ensures that the nuclear facility's safety documentation complies with federal law, Department of Energy (DOE) requirements and SNL standards and expectations. Org. 1383 is also responsible for implementing the Sandia corporate Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Program. Additional responsibilities of Department include research in isotope production/separation technologies, and reactor design and analysis.

Security Clearance:
