**Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves significant issues for our nations security?**

We are seeking an experienced engineer to work both independently and with a diverse team of engineers to design, execute and analyze both wind energy and water power system design studies and experiments. System integration is a major part of this position and therefore breadth of knowledge in mechanical/electrical/software systems with a broad range of skills is of more value than depth of knowledge in a single area. Your tasks will include integrating new sensors into a wind turbine control system, developing software tools to aid design tasks or data processing, supporting field experiments on research wind turbines, supporting wave energy converter control algorithm development, managing software configurations and upgrades, and maintaining documentation.

On any given day, you will:

+ Use a variety of computational tools to design, analyze and test advanced wind turbine and wind plant control concepts to enhance the capabilities and value of wind energy systems in new applications such as microgrids and hybrid power systems
+ Conduct control simulations of energy systems incorporating wind using Hardware-in-the-Loop emulators.
+ Support field testing at the Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) Facility using the teams research turbines and the adjacent hybrid microgrid system.
+ Communicate research results effectively through written, oral, and other creative media methods to appropriate stakeholders, including the funding customer
+ Participate in developing new business through idea generation, proposal writing, and networking opportunities
+ Partner with other researchers and departments across Sandia that work on energy systems, including in the Water Power Technologies Department to work on wave energy converter control

You have the following:

+ M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, or relevant STEM discipline, from an accredited university with at least one year relevant experience; or Ph.D. degree.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance

You also have one, or more, of the following:

+ Experience with industrial control hardware programming and industrial control software development
+ Demonstrated experience in design of advanced controls, optimization, estimation, or detection algorithms for physical systems.
+ Demonstrated experience in modeling of dynamical systems from first principle and experimental data.
+ Experience with real-time implementation of system solutions in a variety of hardware platforms.
+ Experience in developing cyber-security solutions for industrial control systems
+ Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and Python
+ Willingness and ability to travel up to 5 days per month

Department Description:

The Wind Energy Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of wind technologies. This department is responsible for all aspects of wind turbine blade design, system reliability, system integration, performance model validation and verification and uncertainty quantification. For blades, the team performs R&D on materials, airfoil design, structural analysis and design, and manufacturing processes and partners with universities in the areas of composite materials, aero-dynamics, probabilistic analysis, and embedded control sensors and actuators. For grid integration, the team is working on R&D to support cybersecurity of wind plans, and how to improve controls for wind turbine integration with microgrids and evaluating grid service benefits that can be provided by a wind farm. Department activities range from computer based design and analysis, lab testing of components, to full scale testing of wind blades at the SWiFT test site, near Lubbock, TX. Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower.
