We are seeking a mechanical engineer to work with experienced staff in the areas of shock physics and the execution of dynamic and high-pressure tests and associated modeling. Performing these duties would expose the candidate to premier facilities and specialists in the engineering fields.

On any given day, your duties will include:

+ Designing and support for complex experiments in an explosive flyer launch facility
+ Supporting experiments at the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago
+ Supporting hydrodynamic testing to acquire meaningful data regarding the function of elements in mechanical designs
+ Modeling support using state of the art computational hydrocodes in the shock physics regime

+ Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; or masters degree in these fields with at least four years relevant experience; or bachelors degree in these fields with at least eight years relevant experience.
+ Experience designing, executing, and analyzing dynamic high-pressure experiments
+ Ability to hold a Q clearance

+ Experience utilizing high-performance computing capabilities to run hydrocodes or comparable tools for studying material or system behavior under conditions of impact, blast, or other high strain rate loading
+ Experience studying material behavior under conditions of high strain rates and high pressures
+ Experience developing constitutive or EOS models and implementing them into hydrocodes or comparable tools
+ Experience performing experiments using high-speed radiography coupled to dynamic loading platforms at facilities such as DCS, pRad, or LCLS.
+ Experience fielding and analyzing data from high-speed laser diagnostics such as PDV or VISAR

Department Description:

The Mechanics of Materials Department performs experimental and analytical studies to characterize and predict the thermal-mechanical behavior of materials, from atoms to continuum, specializing in fracture and failure. Our experimental work covers the spectrum of discovery to characterization to model validation. Motivated by observations, we develop mathematical models to simulate material responses under various loading and environmental conditions. The fidelity of our models and simulations varies from atomic to continuum scales. We develop numerical methodologies so that our material models can be implemented in high-performance computing simulations. Our experimental capabilities include characterizing materials over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates, developing micro- and nanoscale strain and displacement diagnostics, and testing subsystems to support model validations.
