Our Team is seeking a highly motivated engineer to work in engineering mechanics within a multidisciplinary team working on a diverse set of both research and applications. Work within our group involves developing novel solutions to problems of national significance using world-class computational resources.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

+ Perform engineering mechanics research, development, modeling, and simulation to support a variety of projects (e.g. nuclear safety, design, and qualification)
+ Use state-of-the-art computational tools to conduct nonlinear multiphysics simulations
+ Build model credibility through the application of verification and validation principles
+ Work closely with experimental mechanics and material science organizations to provide validated results of complex and challenging problems
+ Collaborate with the broader engineering mechanics community, both internal and external to Sandia
+ Mentor student interns within our Structural Mechanics Research & Applications Group


+ Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field plus one or more years of experience, or equivalent combination of engineering education and experience
+ Education or experience in nonlinear solid mechanics
+ Experience with modeling and simulation tools such as the finite element method
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


+ PhD in mechanical engineering or other applicable engineering field
+ Experience in modeling and simulation of mechanical systems
+ Experience in thermal mechanical modeling of electronic packages
+ Experience in modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes
+ Demonstrated programming/scripting experience with Matlab, Python, Julia, or similar
+ Proven track record of documenting and presenting findings
+ Existing US DOE Q security clearance

Department Description:

The Component Science and Mechanics Department (1556) provides state-of-the-art engineering mechanics research and science-based engineering solutions for component development and assessment. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and nonlinear systems, are used in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment. Focus areas for the department include: solid mechanics, interface mechanics, contact mechanics, bolted joints, electronic packaging, impact response of mechanisms, advanced stress analysis for predicting fracture and fatigue, and joining techniques such as welding and brazing.

Security Clearance:
