Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation's security? If so, you may be the highly motivated R&D Mechanical Engineer we seek to join our department. Utilizing your strong technical knowledge and experiences, you will handle and coordinate department-wide equipment Procurement, Instillation, Characterization, and Qualification and ensure execution of all the qualifications in the department are completed in a timely manner.

On any given day, you may be called on to support the daily activities of the Mechanical Calibration Lab by:

+ Providing engineering support for the Mechanical Calibration lab.
+ Assuring the quality and efficient calibration of customer assets.
+ Responding to customer inquiries and collaborating with customers on their measurement needs.
+ Improve performance and quality for measurement systems capabilities in the lab.
+ Apply knowledge, experience, and technical capability in measurement science related to the physical fields of length, mass and force and the related systems, equipment, methods, and procedures.
+ Conduct/support research and development of new measurement technologies and techniques related to the labs capabilities in accordance with strategy set by the PSL and the project lead.
+ Team with other PSL engineers and technologists to develop and execute plans and solve measurement and quality issues.
+ Mentor and coordinate activities of technologists and student interns, including technical training, scheduling, and workload management.
+ Develop/maintain equipment and facilities requests for future improvements.
+ Travel on a limited basis for training and to support NNSA technical surveillances and related activities.


+ Bachelors degree in relevant field, or equivalent; **plus 5 years** of engineering or scientific experience and/or accomplishments that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
+ Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) related to gauge and fixture design.
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.


+ Design, manufacturing, inspection, and calibration experience with fixtures and gauges.
+ Experience making precision dimensional measurements as well as precision mass and force measurements.
+ Experience with statistical methods of analysis and measurement uncertainty.
+ Demonstrated ability to develop and qualify measurement systems including documentation of principles of operation, estimation of uncertainty, and procedures meeting quality and ES&H requirements.
+ Experience with a broad application of instruments, assemblies, standards, and systems.
+ Experience working within a rigorous quality system in lab environment.
+ Experience with other programming languages and demonstrated ability to learn new programming languages
+ Experience with ISO 17025, Z540, QC-1 or other quality assurance programs.

Department Description:

Mechanical Calibration, Temperature, and Measurement Assurance, department 9445, is part of the Primary Standards Laboratory that performs a wide variety of specialized calibrations (e.g. production gauges and fixtures) in addition to calibrations of various types of dimensional measuring and test equipment (M&TE) along with torque, and mass. Mechanical Calibration provides consultation and guidance on drawing definition (i.e. GD&T) and measurement practices.

Security Clearance:
