We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated Mechanical Engineer in our dynamic Water Power Technologies Department. You will work both independently and with a multidisciplinary team of expert scientists and engineers. We work on hydrodynamic modeling, work to develop and support open-source software packages, validate computer simulations with field/experimental data, integrate web-based databases, and document work through peer-review publications. Other work opportunities may include research in control systems, lab/bench testing and field testing of water power technologies.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work alongside a multidisciplinary team including interns and senior engineers;
+ Devise and implement hydrodynamic models;
+ Support development and expand the capabilities of wave energy converter modeling tools;
+ Conduct and validate computer simulations/modeling codes with field/experimental data;
+ Develop and integrate intuitive web-based databases to ensure the effective dissemination of information;
+ Communicate research results effectively through written, oral, and other creative media methods to appropriate partners, including the funding customer.


+ Master's degree in an engineering-related field or relevant STEM subject area;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

_The selected candidate will be required to travel (average of up to ~1 week/month) for program meetings, technical interactions and field testing when COVID-19 restrictions allow for appropriate travel._


+ Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink;
+ Proficiency in Python;
+ Experience developing software in a collaborative manner (e.g. Git);
+ Experience with database management, development, and web-based integration;
+ Familiarity with frequency- and time-domain hydrodynamic modeling techniques (e.g. WAMIT, NEMOH, WEC-Sim, SWAN);
+ Proven ability to produce clear and succinct documentation of technical work for technical and non-technical audiences (e.g. publications and presentations).

Department Description:

Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) design and analysis and foundation scour. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation
