Department Description:

The Z/ZBL and Diagnostics Engineering Department (01691) provides fundamental, advanced, and cutting-edge engineering to support the advanced science research and development programs in the Pulsed Power Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. The departments controls, cryogenics, and mechanical engineers, designers and technologists work together with the centers scientists to deliver engineered solutions in the complex development needs of the Z Machine and the Z Beamlet Facility. Department 1691 is an integral contributor in the Pulsed Power Engineering Group (1690) which provides the advanced engineering required to support the Z machine and other advanced Pulsed Power development programs in the Pulsed Power Science Center here at Sandia National Laboratories. This includes engineering support to assure that the Z machine, Sandia's flagship pulsed-power facility, accomplishes its stockpile stewardship mission as well as achieving break through discoveries across the broad spectrum of high-energy-density physics research fields. The group supports the development of new technologies supporting the center's physicists and scientists in their cutting-edge research and development efforts in pulsed power systems, components, diagnostics, and experimental hardware. The department uses CREO and SolidWorks computer aided design platforms and advanced engineering tools like ABAQUS and Sandias CTH Shock Physics and Sierra Suite Codes to perform complex engineering analysis in support of the Centers programs. Control & data acquisition systems are implemented in LabVIEW running on PCs and cRIO embedded controllers, complemented by Allen-Bradley PLCs for specific applications.
