Our team is seeking a dynamic manager for the Verification & Validation (V&V), Uncertainty Quantification (UQ), and Credibility Processes Department. This role provides opportunities spanning project management, technical leadership, and teaming across the department functional areas, applying them to nuclear weapons (NW) design, analysis, and computational mechanics code teams. You may be called upon to engage in any of the following roles/activities in this role:

**Department/Group/Center Leadership**

+ Work closely with the 1540 management team and more broadly across management of computational simulation analysis groups in a wide range of planning, technical and business operations
+ Work closely with nuclear deterrence (ND) management teams to understand tactical and strategic needs as they relate to an increased reliance on modeling and simulation to support lab-wide programmatic goals (i.e. qualification)
+ Engage and understand ND program objectives for credibility and uncertainty quantification
+ Ensure that computational simulation analysis teams are well-supported in their efforts to ensure they have evidence for credibility in their results
+ Develop the appropriate balance between research, development, and application to steward the department's capabilities for the future, while ensuring customer's expectations and mission requirements are met
+ Coordinate staff recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, work assignments, salary, and recognition and disciplinary actions
+ Champion and promote a diverse and inclusive department
+ Ensure a culture that promotes safety and security
+ Lead members of the workforce within the department, including supporting their professional and career development as staff members
+ Run day-to-day operational, technical, and administrative responsibilities of the department
+ Serve as a derivative classifier (DC)

**Technical Leadership**

+ Develop and manage relationships with management and staff in 1540, 1500 and throughout the laboratories
+ Provide technical leadership, working with a wide range of organizations to develop verification and validation capabilities, including modeling and simulation codes
+ Develop and maintain collaborative teaming relationships with managers across 1000 and other key partner organizations across the Laboratory
+ Participate in various Division 1000 and Laboratory initiatives
+ Develop and grow Sandia Partnership Projects (SPP) that align with Sandias mission and help grow the departments capabilities

**Programmatic Development and Leadership**

+ Provide programmatic leadership within the ASC Program in the areas of verification and validation methods
+ Program management for various projects within the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) V&V and ATDM program elements
+ Support program development and management for both ND and SPP customers, including other government agencies (e.g., DoD), industry (e.g., Goodyear) and other external collaborators (e.g., AWE)
+ Build and maintain partnerships with academia and professional societies in the specific area of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification

Required:

+ PhD in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field or master's degree in STEM with equivalent experience
+ Five years of related science and engineering experience
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance

Desired:

+ Minimum of 2 years of proven leadership experience
+ Experience or educational background in verification and validation methods and practice
+ Experience building and leading teams
+ Experience working with a variety of partners and customers
+ Experience with engineering science, computational science and software product development
+ Experience with project or program leadership
+ Participate in or lead an engineering team with a focus on computational analysis
+ Experience with or knowledge of Sandias nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship and/or life extension programs
+ Research experience and a record of external engagement
+ A successful track record of program development activities
+ Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills
+ Experience working with or on the Accelerated Strategic Computing (ASC) verification and validation program

Department Description:

The mission of the V&V, UQ, Credibility Processes (1544) is to provide research, development, and application of mathematical and experimental techniques to assess the credibility of physics-based computational simulations. The multi-disciplinary team, experienced in simulation and experimentation, draws from a wide range of disciplines, including fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, radiation effects, solid and structural mechanics, heat transfer, numerical methods, optimization, statistics, and risk assessment, to support the laboratories' mission. Verification determines whether a computational model accurately represents the conceptual-mathematical model of a physical process, and that the computational model is solved accurately. This requires an exacting knowledge of models and their numerical approximations when implemented into codes. Validation determines, quantitatively, the degree of agreement between experimental data and simulation data, including their respective uncertainties. Uncertainty quantification is a key element of validation and it encompasses a wide range of mathematical and statistical analysis methods. The combination of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification establishes credibility in our computational models, which are then employed in making high-consequence risk-informed decisions. The analysis tools developed in 1544 can be used to (1) focus and prioritize research and development expenditures, (2) mitigate risk through exploration of system design alternatives, (3) optimize products and process in the presence of both uncertain and variable parameters, and (4) support risk-informed decision making based on statistically-quantified data.

Security Clearance:
