You could be the Research & Development (R&D) Manager we are seeking to join our diverse team. You will lead the Solid Dynamics Experiments Department that operates two research facilities and ensures overall operational and scientific excellence in results. You will work with the High Energy Density (HED) Material Physics management team and staff to set the technical directions and priorities of our research program in high-pressure physics as well as develop collaborations within Sandia colleagues and customers!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Ensure a culture that promotes safety, security, and a diverse and inclusive work environment
+ Collaborate closely with other organizations responsible for the facility maintenance, engineering activities, and research efforts to assure safe and effective experimental outcomes at the departments facilities
+ Provide leadership and coordination of the departments research activities
+ Integrate and advocate for the departments research within the Pulsed Power Sciences Center, Sandia National Laboratories various Divisions, as well as with national and international scientific communities.
+ Manage National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) sponsored research programs being conducted at Sandia.
+ Strengthen internal and external partnerships to enrich relationships, leverage strengths, and amplify our mission impact.
+ Ensure career growth for department members by executing on timely and relevant managerial responsibilities such as recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment and feedback, as well as meaningful work assignments designed to support individual growth and meet mission deliverables.
+ Collaborate with multiple levels of the Pulsed Power Sciences Center on strategic and tactical planning and execution.

+ Master's degree in the physical sciences, engineering, material science, or a closely related field
+ Four years of relevant research and development experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development
+ Two years experience leading or managing teams
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated in technical and project presentations, and technical publications and reports
+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


+ PhD in a relevant STEM field
+ Experience in the area of experimental high-pressure physics, demonstrated by a track record of innovative research and high impact publications
+ Experience in facility operations and/or working with safety of operations
+ Experience in project management and a demonstrated ability to successfully lead and manage complex technical projects
+ A sound working knowledge of nuclear weapons related programs and broad national security programs, including experience with NNSA Defense Programs
+ Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and alliances across organizational boundaries within an organization, and to establish partnerships with other National Laboratories and NNSA headquarters
+ An active DOE Q security clearance

Department Description:

The Solid Dynamics Experiments Department at Sandia National Laboratories is responsible for research and development in the area of high-pressure physics. Areas of interest range from equation of state of solids and fluids to properties of heterogeneous, energetic, and other advanced materials. The department operates two facilities: the Shock Thermodynamics Applied Research (STAR) Facility and the Dynamic Integrated Compression Experimental (DICE) Facility. STAR operates several high velocity launchers and DICE one launcher, two pulsed power machines, and a target fabrication laboratory. The department works closely with two other departments, HEDP Theory and Dynamic Material Properties, a part of the HED Material Physics Group, in turn a part of the Pulsed Power Sciences Center.

Security Clearance:
