We are seeking a manager to lead an established, multi-disciplinary team of nuclear safeguards and export control professionals. The work in this group is a complex, multidimensional challenge that requires flexible and dedicated problem solvers who have the cultural interoperability to effectively work in international, politically sensitive environments. We develop IAEA safeguards technologies and implement technically informed safeguards approaches to detect material diversion. We also engage with international partners to reduce the movement of export controlled, dual-use, and sensitive CBRNE technologies across international borders and entry points; implement strong national technology control lists; and encourage compliance with international standard methodologies for technology controls.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Guide the work of the department.
+ Create and sustain an inclusive work environment that supports the hardworking MOWs in the department.
+ Oversee and manage members of the workforce including hiring, assessment and performance management, and professional development consistent with mission objectives of the organization.
+ Promote excellence by managing and coordinating specific work, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements.
+ Maintain effective customer relationships with sponsors.
+ Ensure a sustainable funding profile, as well as identifying new opportunities that demonstrate the departments capabilities consistent with the vision of the Group and Center.
+ Work effectively across the management team using capabilities and opportunities to best address the dynamic risk space in which we operate
+ Engage in strategic plan development with management team to guide decision-making, and to position the department for long term success.
+ Counsel and assist employees and management on government legislation, U.S. Department of Energy contract compliance, and Sandia National Laboratories' policies or procedures to ensure compliance.


+ Advanced degree in science, engineering, or social sciences or; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered (BS + 4 years; AS + 8 years; no degree + 12 years)

- Plus 8 years relevant experience
+ Minimum 5 years demonstrated leadership experience
+ Ability to travel both domestically and internationally
+ Current DOD or DOE clearance with ability obtain a Q clearance


+ Demonstratable knowledge of international nuclear nonproliferation issues, including treaties and agreements, international organizations, nuclear safeguards, and export control
+ Experience working with a broad set of sponsors including the DOE/NNSA, DOS, and the IAEA
+ Proven ability to deliver results, effectively mentor and lead people and guide multidisciplinary teams to accomplish goals.
+ Experience with international travel policies and implementing international projects
+ Ability to effectively lead high performing, multidisciplinary teams
+ Experience with employee hiring, training, professional development, and retention
+ Ability to expand existing work portfolio into new and relevant areas
+ Experience interacting effectively with various levels of internal/strategic partners, including building and maintaining effective working relationships
+ Experience summarizing and presenting work in publications and presentations
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills and customer service skills

Department Description:

The mission of the International Safeguards and Engagements Department (6832) is to provide technical solutions to the international safeguards regime and support the development of safeguards and export control competencies in partner countries. Through our US government sponsors we research technologies, build capabilities, and provide analyses to support the international nuclear nonproliferation monitoring regime's mission of ensuring that nuclear activities are used for peaceful purposes. Our work supports the export control regime through commodity identification training. We engage with international partners through the Visiting Research Scholar Program and the Cooperative Monitoring Center.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
