The Hydrogen and Materials Science Department is seeking a R&D Manager! The department provides expertise on the interaction of hydrogen (and its isotopes) with all types of materials. The Department performs scientific and engineering research to develop fundamental understanding on the aging of materials in gaseous environments, including hydrogen, and applies this understanding to resolve its effects on the performance and reliability of materials relevant to Sandias nuclear deterrence and energy missions. The Departments work covers a broad range of areas, including analyzing hydrogens long-term impact on materials used in fuel cell and gas transfer systems, developing solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, assessing the suitability of materials for hydrogen storage, advising hydrogen safety codes and standards, maintaining and enhancing nationally recognized core and enabling capabilities in hydrogen science, and assisting in hydrogen storage and fuel cell demonstration projects aimed to bring technological advancements towards broad-based commercial availability.

The manager will ensure project and program alignment with current sponsors and will work to develop emerging research areas to advance the Laboratories mission needs consistent with its strategic priorities.

Strategic responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

99. Providing intellectual leadership and setting priority directions for the Department
99. Leading Sandias energy-related hydrogen and fuel cell research program and maintaining relationships with DOE leadership and external partners (i.e., other national labs, industry)
99. Leading Sandias science engagement in materials research related to the storage and delivery of hydrogen isotopes for nuclear weapons
99. Maintaining a close partnership with other Sandia program managers to ensure the Departments responsiveness to enduring and emerging mission needs
99. Creating a long-range strategic plan to maintain the health of existing capabilities that remain relevant to the Departments sponsors while developing new capabilities to anticipate evolving sponsor needs
99. Engaging with the broader Sandia materials community to ensure that materials science resources, core competencies, and scientific capabilities are optimized and deployed to advance Sandias mission areas

Everyday operational responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

99. Ensuring the safe execution of laboratory experiments involving significant hazards associated with laboratory experiments such as chemicals, flammable materials, and high-pressure systems
99. Managing the technical team and resources that support the experimental laboratories
99. Overseeing and managing the training, work assignments, performance assessment, and career development of department employees
99. Promoting technical excellence by managing and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, work scope, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements
99. Promoting an inclusive, inspiring, and rewarding work environment within the department

Required:

+ PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or other technical field supported by research experience and a strong publication record
+ Experience developing and executing science-based research programs
+ Experience building and leading multi-disciplinary, technically diverse research teams
+ Ability to travel as needed
+ Ability to hold a DOE-Q security clearance

Desired:

+ At least two years experience leading multidisciplinary, technically diverse research teams
+ Research experience and a strong publication record in materials science or a related field
+ Experience interacting with sponsors and customers to respond to enduring needs and to anticipate emerging requirements
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Experience in safely leading operationally complex experimental work
+ Experience with the Sandias nuclear deterrence mission or sustainable transportation research or related energy topics
+ Management experience, including recruiting, mentoring, and retaining excellent technical staff

Security Clearance:
