We are seeking a R&D Manager to lead Sandias Applied Combustion Research Department! The department resides within Sandias Combustion Research Facility (CRF), which focuses on performing state-of-the-art experimental and computational research in collaboration with other leading experts on todays most critical energy and environmental issues. The mission of the CRFs Applied Combustion Research department is to identify and fill gaps in the science foundations of combustion technologies to improve our nations ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly. Current research is focused primarily on developing the detailed understanding of fuel-spray, combustion, and heat transfer processes that is needed by industry to build and optimize a new generation of advanced, high-efficiency, clean internal combustion (IC) engines that use both conventional and alternative fuels.

The manager will ensure project and program alignment with current sponsors and will work to develop emerging research areas to advance the Laboratories mission needs consistent with its strategic priorities. A key role of this position is to partner with another Sandia manager as co-leaders of two highly collaborative departments that comprise the Applied Combustion Research capability. The two managers will work together to align projects and programs with evolving needs of various sponsors and also to engage staff in emerging research areas that advance the Laboratories broader mission.

Strategic responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

99. Providing intellectual leadership and setting priority directions for the Department
99. Co-leading Sandias energy-related engine combustion research program and co-managing the relationship with DOE leadership and external partners (i.e., other national labs, industry, and universities)
99. Creating a long-range strategic plan to maintain the health of existing capabilities that remain relevant to the Departments sponsors while also developing new capabilities to anticipate evolving sponsor needs
99. Identifying and developing opportunities to broaden research activities and sponsors, leveraging the unique capabilities in reacting flows and thermal sciences in multiple departments at the CRF
99. Maintaining a close partnership with other Sandia program managers to ensure the departments responsiveness to enduring and emerging mission needs
99. Engaging with the broader Sandia engineering science community to ensure that resources, core competencies, and scientific capabilities are optimized and deployed to advance Sandias mission areas

Everyday operational responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

99. Ensuring the safe execution of laboratory experiments involving significant hazards associated with laboratory experiments such as high-power lasers, chemicals, flammable materials, and high-pressure systems
99. Co-managing the technical team and resources that support the experimental laboratories
99. Overseeing and managing the training, work assignments, performance assessment, and career development of department employees
99. Promoting technical excellence by managing and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, work scope, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements
99. Promoting an inclusive, inspiring, and rewarding work environment within the department

+ PhD in Engineering or other technical field supported by research experience and a strong publication record
+ Experience developing and executing science-based research programs
+ Experience building and leading multi-disciplinary, technically diverse research teams
+ Ability to travel as needed
+ Ability to hold a DOE-Q security clearance


+ At least two years experience leading multidisciplinary, technically diverse research teams
+ Research experience in thermal-fluid sciences, laser-optical diagnostics, and/or computational fluid dynamics
+ Experience interacting with sponsors and customers to respond to enduring needs and to anticipate emerging requirements
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Experience in safely managing operationally complex experimental work
+ Experience with sustainable transportation research or related energy topics
+ Management experience, including recruiting, mentoring, and retaining excellent technical staff

Security Clearance:
