We are seeking a dedicated and creative scientist or engineer in the areas of geohydrology or geoscience to advance scientific investigations of the hydrologic environment and conditions surrounding the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The successful candidate will use their experience with groundwater monitoring and aquifer testing to plan and support work of the modeling team, including ground water flow and transport modeling and particle track modeling.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work in conjunction with the field-team lead in the planning of work activities with respect to their necessity in a modeling capacity;
+ Participate in field-team planning activities as needed;
+ Apply field-team data and results to regulatory models, and prepare technical reports and documents for the Sponsor and the Regulator;
+ Report on the progress of modeling work;
+ Execute technical work;
+ Provide expert guidance on designing scientific investigations and solving problems based on sound technical bases.


+ Master's degree in Geohydrology, Geophysics, Geochemistry or closely related field (i.e. Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Science) with a minimum of five years related experience, or a PhD, with one year experience;
+ Experience (or education or knowledge) in flow and transport modeling;
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

_You reside in or have the ability to reside in Carlsbad, New Mexico._


+ Experience working with regulatory-driven R&D
+ Experience working within very tight QA/QC requirements;
+ Experience in site characterization and application of hydrological parameters in complex hydrologic models;
+ Familiarity with modern methods of aquifer characterization, testing, and analyses;
+ Proven excellence in the technical field, excellent oral and written communication skills, and proven interpersonal skills including respectful teaming and communication;
+ Ability to prioritize and mentor others to work on basic tasks;
+ Experience developing numerical software in Python, FORTRAN, C/C++ and working within a HPC Linux environment.

Department Description:

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the world's only licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the disposal of transuranic waste. WIPP is operated by Nuclear Waste Partnership, LLC, under contract to the Department of Energy's Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO). Sandia provides scientific advice to CBFO in many areas, including modifications to the repository's operating permits, periodic recertification of the repository, ongoing monitoring of repository performance against regulatory requirements, and optimization of the national transuranic waste complex. The Repository Performance Department, part of Sandia's Defense Waste Management Programs Group, provides the experimental and fieldwork capability needed to assist CBFO in assuring continued and uninterrupted certification and permitting of WIPP.
